As you might have seen, I'm putting together a Steel Legion force that I plan on using at my first tournament, NetEA, this fall. Below is the list I was thinking about. Looking forward to tapping into everyone collective experience so please let me know what you think!

Regimental HQ
Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra

Super-Heavy Tank Company
Shadowsword 2x
Baneblade
Hydra

Tank Company
Leman Russ 9x
Vanquisher
Hydra

Artillery Battery
3 Basilisks

Sentinel Squadron
4 Sentinels

Vulture Squadron
4 Vultures

Deathstrike Missile Battery
2 Deathstrike Missile Launchers

Thunderbolt Fighters
2 Thunderbolts

Super-Heavy Tank Platoon
Shadowsword

Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest trying it out and seeing how it performs

my initial thoughts are that you're low on activations (9) and speed, with only two units with a speed of >30cm

with that lack of speed you'll struggle to capture the enemy blitz objective and also be in range to double back to your own....

I've never managed to make both a tank company and superheavy company work at 3k myself, personally I'd drop the superheavy company for a mechanised infantry company for the speed and engagement potential

finally, unless model availability is an issue, I'd take manticores over basilisks 90% of the time, basiliks are a wee tad tougher and can direct fire, but two templates plus disrupt is just such a great asset, fire two on one turn for two templates at 4BP and fire one the turn after, the disrupt ability helps make up for the poor hit values of the 2BP barrage

hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback kyuss! I should be able to get my hands on some manticores before then.

How many activations would you recommend? I read somewhere that 3 per 1000 pts was a good starter, but what's you're opinion on that?

My other question is do you think that vultures and deathstrikes are worth their points? Between the two its a sixth of my total and I was a little concerned about them making their points back.

Remember it is just not about killing the equivalent of points but how the unit(s) in question change the flow of battle. For instance, if the enemy holds back their super heavies due to your DS and plays more conservatively and allows you to set the pace of the battle, that's worth the points.

However I'd go with more mech infantry and a single baneblade at 3k and shoot for at least 11 activations gor SL armies.

11 is ideal, 10 is enough if using warhounds

I'd never use singleton baneblades myself, shadowswords are a much better choice in general

True on the BB accounting above. I figured it was included from a model availability and/or love of the iconic unit.
To note: I expect that the 2x Baneblade cannon shot modification will probably get approved so that really makes her a strong viable assault unit. However as it stands today, the Shadowsword is a preferred weapons platform.

Thanks for the feedback! I did some digging on the BatReps and Tactic threads to see what else people use and supplemented that with what you've given me so far.

Regimental HQ + hydra

Mech Inf Co + Hydra

Tank Co + Hydra

Artillery Co (Manticores)

Artillery Co (Manticores)

SHT Platoon (SS)

Sentinel Squad

Flak Battery

Rough Riders Platoon

T-bolt Fighters

Thoughts: This leaves me 50 pts shy, but I've maxed out on support formations. I considered dropping the attached hydras and adding another squad of Tbolts for the 11th activation. Alternatively, kyuss I saw you're a big fan of running the list with the warhounds. I do have two warhounds if they really do offer a stronger alternative. Thanks again!

The top UK guard player often runs the following:

Reg hq + hydra
Mech inf + hydra
Tank company + hydra
Sentinels
Sentinels
Hydras
Manticores
Warhound
Warhound
Thunderbolts

I'm still struggling to get the hang of that build but I can see how it works and I'm a tremendously unlucky player when it comes to guard.... ;)
