Post subject:  New player hello

Hello everyone.
As the tittle says i am a new player located in Exeter Devon (U.K).
Both myself and a couple of friends have been playing 40k for 15 plus years. We have been playing warmachine and 40k at tornis for a good couple of years.
last week i arrived at the club and one of my friends brought his old epic models along and we had a game, what a game i cant believe i never picked it up all those years ago at the G.W stores i used to go to!
I have not played 40k for a few months and dont fancy playing that again for quite a while at least. Its just how i feel about the rules and G.Ws direction (however i love the fluff and black library books so still want a game system based around that fluff, Dan Abnett titanicus etc...) I was recomended this forum by one of my friends and see there is a healthy tornament seen (this also apeals to me).I am also in awe at how the comunity seems to be driving the development of the system forward and have never been exposed to a comunity that promotes this much free (but controlled) rain.
Both my friends have forces of old and are half way there with the rules (eldar and steal legion guard),me however, well im a complete newb.
I would love to do a guard valkyrie list but seems quite finesse to use and cost an awfull lot to buy so i have decided to go with good old solid space marines.(unless anyone can convince me air cav is a good option for a newb)!
My questions to anyone who could help are as follows:
What core units do you recomend?
2000 or 3000 points to cover torni play?
I hear lots about thunderhawks/warhound titans are they good for a new player or a points sink?
A link to a codex that i will be able to use at any U.K tornis i may attend (hopefully 2 this year)?
I have posted in the trading section of this forum (i have absolutely no models/templates etc)!!!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and thanks in advance for any info or links to bits for sale i may receive

And aim for 3000 as that's the most common tournament size. The current high mark is 4000 points at Britcon.

Hullo tellos and welcome to the forum!

If you're interested in tournaments, and want to have a look, there's a tournament on in Bristol in two weeks' time...

90% of Epic tournaments are 'oop north, so (If you have a car available) it may be a good day (or two) for you to come along and check it out, even if you don't feel ready to join in yet (Though the Bristol tournament is known for having a higher proportion of newbies than any other Epic tournament, if you did want to give it a go).

The UK tournaments calendar for Epic can be found here: http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/calendar.shtml

A great resource for checking out typical army lists is the EpicUK website, as they have every army list tracked and recorded for every player over the past couple of years.

Here's a Space Marine army list I often use:
http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampio ... =46&tid=34

Other than taking two Tactical Formations (Most people only take one) and a slightly above average number of Character upgrades, it's fairly typical (The core of the army list is composed around Devastator and Assault formations, Thunderhawks, and Warhound Titans).

Both are really, really good. :-)

Hi there E&C

I have seen the Bristol torni and will hopefully be able to attend on Sat 15th (cant do the Sunday, its my birthday so time with misses and my son, cant get out of that!!!)
I do have a car and am very used to having to travel to at least Nottingham for a good sized torni so no problem with the up north bit.
I am thinking of treating the Sat 15th Bristol trip as a bit more of a "meet the local comunity" and ask as many questions of people as i can.
I am glad the warhounds are good as the forgeworld models are really nice and would make a nice centre piece to my force.
Thanks again buddy

Awesome news :-)!

As Ben (E&C) stated we're very welcoming of new players and most regular tournament players are only too happy to not only
a) answer any rules questions that you may have as a game progresses
but also
b) point out any glaring tactical mistakes you make along the way! No point in winning through an opponents lack of experience!

As such if you do fancy coming down to play in the tournament yr more than welcome :-)
