Hey everyone, new around here and new to Epic too! I played my first game last night, 2000 pts vs Eldar, and even though i got quite badly beaten i thoroughly enjoyed playing the game! So much so i am now looking towards building my own 3000 pt Guard list. Therefore, i am after some advice on the list first, but then also some tactical advice too! Regimental HQ - 1 Supreme Commander, 12 Guard, 7 Chimera's, 1 Hydra - 550 pts Infantry Company - 12 Guard, 1 Commander, 4 Fire Support - 350 pts Tank Company - 9 Leman Russ, 1 Vanquisher, Hydra - 700 pts (BTS) Storm Troopers- 8x. 4xValkyrie. 350pts Sentinal Squadron - 100 pts Artillery Battery - 3 Manticores - 250 pts Flak Battery – 3 Hydra – 150 pts Super Heavy Tank Platoon - Shadowsword - 200 pts Super Heavy Tank Platoon - Shadowsword - 200 pts 2 Thunderbolts – 150 pts So any changes people would make? As i say, i am totally new to Epic, and the 40k universe (previously played Fantasy), so any advice would be great both on the list and tactically (my tactics were severely lacking yesterday ![]() Cheers Zog |

You've given yourself a good basic list to work from. Some people are able to use tank companies, some are not and I am definately in the can not bracket. I would also think carefully about the storm troopers, they are also difficult to use against a good opponent and can have problems making their points back. I'd recommend looking at Rough Riders and Sentinels as other options. Plus I always like using Vultures. |

Welcome aboard! You have a good, solid list. Our giving advice is good, but I've found that sometimes actually playing a list is more helpful. Most players tend to have their own style and will tailor their list accordingly, kind of as Tiny Tim mentions. For some reason T'bolts and Marauders usually underperform for me (I blame it on my dice), so I often don't take them. |

I love the idea of the tank company! For me its what Guard are about! So i think they will be staying in my list for the time being! My game yesterday was at 200 points vs Eldar and the list was along the lines of: Infantry Company - 12 Guard, 1 Commander, 4 Fire Support, Hydra - 400 pts Infantry Company - 12 Guard, 1 Commander, 4 Fire Support, Hydra - 400 pts Tank Company - 9 Leman Russ, 1 Vanquisher - 650 pts Sentinal Squadron - 100 pts Artillery Battery - 3 Manticores - 250 pts Super Heavy Tank Platoon - Shadowsword - 200 pts and i managed to get 1 Commissar per unit! Although i got badly beaten, i enjoyed the army and though id use it as a basis for a 3000 point army. I think ill try* to purchase it and play with it, from there i can they make any tweaks i wish. I enjoyed the game so can see me playing regularly! |

Looks fairly sensible from where I'm sitting. I've never used a Guard army myself, but I have played against them quite a bit. As an opponent, I've found both Tank Companies and Storm Troopers a real pain to have to deal with, so both of those formations would get the thumbs-up from me. Whether you need two Shadowswords can depend on what your opponent likes to take. If you're not likely to be facing that much in the way of war engines, one might be enough. You might want to see if you can squeeze in another infantry company somewhere, possibly mechanised, but you may be okay as you are. Personally, I prefer Basilisks to Manticores, but that's more personal preference than anything else. With the Hydra battery, the Hydrae in the HQ and Tank company, and the thunderbolt squadron, you've certainly got plenty of air cover. Possibly more than you need, unless you expect to be facing a lot of enemy aircraft. Admittedly, both Hydrae and Thunderbolts do have other uses. |

As has been said best bet is to play the list, even better if you can borrow or proxy the army for a couple of games. As others say some can get formations to work, others not. Its quite a personal thing. I find t'bolts awesome but my storm troopers have never really done anything for me, all down to my miss using them I'm sure. Get out and play is the best advice you'll receive ![]() |
