OGBM lists have are meant to have trouble controlling ground.

there is an option for a 9 stompa(+extra bits) formation that seems like it might help out a bit there.

The problem is when i run the game in my head, the stompas barely move, get shredded and break oh so quickly.

Is this a relistic idea? or is my theory hammer correct?

The Stompas should always be doubling and always end up in cover... don't be afraid to take walker tests with them; the -1 to be hit makes a big difference against, usually low, AT attack values.

No idea about the orkimedies list, but stompa mobs are fun in the core list. I know the reason to get them is normally the supa stompa. But you can have fun with a small horde garrisoned without the WE forward. Maybe with a few more walkers to the rear to take supressions and the like.

My regular opponent sometimes takes a mob of 9 stompas, and they are hugely effective. Hard to kill, get bonuses for rallying (until they have less then 5 left) and they threaten everything in a fairly large patch of the board until you deal with them. That's part of why they work well for him - I have to concentrate fire on them in disproportionate amount to their points.

Its more walker lets you get into cover which means the enemy has to make a shot at -1 to hit you.

Walker means you get to re-roll failed dangerous terrain tests, so your Stompas can quite easily stomp through woods and ruins to get the -1 to hit for being in cover.
