hi,

posted this in my campaign thread but split it out as its more army list related,

i was hoping to get advice on a decent army list for a couple of new players who will be using the list in a campaign

3k points value core army with another 2k reserve, anything goes in terms of units ive got heaps of everything marine related

useful info,
we are using:
the net epic armageddon ruleset,
standard codex ref : https://traitor-legion.appspot.com/choo ... odex_NETEA
we plan to play 4-6 games over the year so a list thats noob friendly but still flexible when they get more experienced.

tbh marines aren't really your best bet for a noob friendly army! especially ppl coming from 40k who think marines shoot at everything.... ;) also they are an air-assault/drop list at heart, which can be very difficult for a new player to get their head round.... when you get the hang of marines, they can be quite forgiving, but that's not really the case for a new player, this can definitely lead to frustration, not something you particularly want if you're trying to attract new players to the game!

I think something like the following would be your best option:

tacticals w/supcom, hunter and razorback
tacticals w/hunter and razorback
devastators
scouts w/razorback
scouts w/razorback
scouts
speeders
terminators w/chaplain
thunderhawk
warhound
warhound
tbolts

it has lots of ground formations, the tacticals, scouts and warhounds can work in a mutually supporting manner in engagements, while the terminators and thunderhawk give you a deep strike capability and can either pick off lone warhounds or the like, or go screaming in to the opposing BTS with devs/tacticals in support fire range

for the extras I'd suggest a second thawk and terminator formation, then probably some predator annihilators, land raiders, bikes and vindicators, mostly to try out other unit types and playstyles

I've played2-3 games so thats the extent of my skills, things should be evenly enough matched

Are the hunter and razorback in addition to the three rhinos?

Theres one orc player is a strike cruiser any use? Particularly against orc hordes?

depends, the strike cruiser is generally best to disrupt your opponent's deployment zone, you can then pod formations in to finish off enemies which have been damaged by the barrage, it's more of a tool to prep engagements and force your opponent to deploy in a certain way than a good way to kill stuff, if you get lucky and your opponent sets up 3-4 formations where you've plotted, it can be pretty devastating

but that being said, spaceships are probably not really for the beginner, better to get a handle on the main rules before you start adding orbital assets in...

I believe this list is being built for use in the campaign. Consequently there are several considerations that are different from the 'standard' kind of enquiry. I believe the opposing lists are likely to be limited to Ork, Marines and ???? More important will be the question of how you decide which formations will fight in a given battle.

Personally, I would try to build 'divisions', consisting of a number of formations you think will work well together with one or more 'specialisation' (AA, AT etc), and then combine several of these together to form an 'army'. To be fair, this kind of approach also depends on how you are intending to run the campaign.

thanks all,

what would you rate as the top two anti infantry units in the space marines and the top two anti tank units in the marines?

They use terminators for both really..... marines deal with threats through engagements, and terminators are their top engagement force

As a mighty unit which can take most things down, terminators with 4 land raiders in a landing craft is bananas powerful (and expensive!)

If you go down the shooting route then either flavour of pred is useful in their respective AP or AT role....

Basically with marines you pick off smaller formations and either gang up on the big dangerous stuff or avoid it and nab objectives
