I can't help it if the list only has 5 non-war engine units Imo redundancy is the key with portals - in my first (and only game so far) i lost 10 out of 12 monoliths by the end of turn 2 (yay crappy armour saves), and if i'd had the more traditional 9 i'd have lost the game at that point. Infantry wise i'd like to get some flayed ones at some point to mix things up a bit, but currently not available and all that. Past that though you're just diluting an assault army with bits with so-so shooting, and AA that on paper is great, but in practice? easy to nullify.

I'd considered the solo monoliths with obelisk and warbarge, but the solo portal makes it very difficult to get tricksy with movement shenanigans.

I played one game against necrons and managed to kill exactly 0 monoliths. I managed to break some which made it worse.

Because painting an entire Necron army is quicker than finishing off my Orks Plus, on a club level it's one army we didn't have access to, and given it plays quite differently to a lot of armies it's useful for people to get experience against it.
