Gday all, I know it looks silly asking this question just after posting up about wanting to run a Epic tournament, but how do I do it?
I guess my thoughts are these:
(1) What sorta points work well for a tourney (time-wise and play-wise)? (2) What lists do I make legal? (3) Do I run it with prizes? (4) Are there any other things I should be considering. (5) Are there any other organizers who can give me a basic rundown of what they do with theirs?
I think I may have a location sorted out and there seems to be a bit of interest, but I now just need some more info to expand my ideas.
Cheers

I actually think that they are very sensible questions. The best person to contact is Braveheart as he is the main organizer in the UK. Also have a look at the rules pack on the Dragon Slayers website, also put together by Braveheart, and use this as the basis from which to start.
Most tournaments in the UK are based around 3000pts with between 2.5 and 3 hours per game. Always give a bit longer for the first game of the day as people are rusty as well as they talk too much before beginning.
Prizes cost money to get, so these are the lowest priority on my list, see how much the venue is going to be first and then think about if you are serviving food. once you have costed these up then a little bit extra, rounding off, can give you a fund for trophies or small prizes.

I asked the same questin 6 months ago and recieved more or less the same answer. it's a good answer so I recomend that you follow the advice, but since I recently finished my first tournament i can offer some other insights.
1. For me 3000points work very well. It doesn't take to long to play, most people have 3000 points (go bigger and some people can't enter), And I like the fact that at 3000 points you have to prioritize in what you bring to the table.
2. I suggest going with Handbook 2008, it's readily avialble and printable, and the differences aren't that great that you'll need much relearning. And all "complete" lists are included. use those and approve only special list after testing them out yourself.
3. I had a small plaque (sp?) for the winner of the tournament. it didn't cost that much but is a nice touch. On the other hand i didn't have take any fee for playing.
4. Time is difficult to estimate. Depending upon how much the participants have played it can vary alot (going by my tournament most were very rusty, but got the speed up during the games). My plan was for 2? hour but it was a little short but if your players play alot it's feasable. Don't forget terrain, Nice terrain is an eye catcher and does alot for the gaming experiance.
5. I started a website (freewebs) specifically for this tournament and on that website I published the rules pictures of my miniatures and a small simple forum for discussion, about lists rules and timetable and so. I can definatly recommend doing it that way. (it's dirt simple, I'm no computer programmer but had no problems. And it's free, thats a big +). And if you read swedish here's the link GotCon tournament page
