Hello all, I just thought I'd let you know that I'm post-poning the Euro EpiCon Event I have been planning to host at our wargaming facilities in Dordogne, France.

Despite some interest, no one has been able to attend - at least this time.  I am not sure whether this is the price of travel, the price of tickets/accomodation, or simply that the dates aren't good for the majority of people on this forum.

I had hoped that this event would be a laid-back, fun affair, reflecting (what I think) is the spirit of this forum and everyone who takes part in it.  However, I also realise that this kind of event might not appeal to everyone, especially those who enjoy competitive tournament gaming.  I also proposed this date to test the waters, so to speak, thinking that having the event out of school-holidays time might make it cheaper and easier for people to travel & attend; though this might not neccessarily be the case.

So, I open this to everyone who has expressed interest in either this event, or at some point visiting our gaming facilities in France, and hopefully next year we can arrange something that actually fits with what people actually want.

I'd just appreciate some feedback to these questions:

Firstly, is an international/European Epic/6mm sci-fi event something that members of this forum would want to attend?

Secondly, would you prefer such an event to be atournament/competitiveevent, or a less formal, looser event which is simply about meeting up with like minded gamers and playing your favourite game?

Thirdly, if such an event were to take place next year, when would be the best month/time for you to attend?  Speaking from the perspective of someone travelling from the UK, if you're planning to fly to either Limoges or Bergerac (the airports nearest to where we're based), using Ryanair or Flybe, it is usually cheaper to do so (a) out of school-term time, and (b)flying midweek rather than Friday or Monday.  So this may affect some people's choice of when such an event takes place.

Anyway, thank you to those who have expressed an interest in this event; I do hope that something could be organised for next year, as Epic is my favourite game, and it would be excellent to meet more of the people who frequent these forums!

:)

This feedback comes from a 35 year old father of three children so I can't speak for those who actually have some free time.  :;): However, as it seems there are quite many of us here this hopefully is of some use.  :)

1. Definitely. I'd LOVE to attend something like that.

2. Personally I'd prefer a bit more informal event than a regular, tooth-and-nail-taste-of-blood-in-your-mouth kind of event.

That said, it's the third question that poses a serious problem for me.

-I am married.
-I have three small children.
-I have a full-time job.

The full-time job part means it's quite impossible for me to go anywhere mid-week. The other two mean it's kind of hard for me to justify a three day holiday to a foreign country just for myself. Situation would, of course,  be different if most of the offspring were in their teens but at the moment they're quite lot of work to say the least. I know _I'd_ be P'd Off if my wife just announced she'd be going off to France for a long weekend and leave me as the CinC home front.

To sum up. Yes, I'd certainly love to attend. At the moment it just isn't possible.  :(

1. Yes, but its unlikely to be realistic from Australia

2. Looser and more comradely

3. Refer to answer 1  :(

I certainly would have been interested in this event - I wasnt really that bothered by the format.

The things that prevented me going were that the Dragon slayers grand tournament is on the 27/28th of october and as we are getting towards the end of the year finding the holiday days was a little difficult as I am trying to save them for christmas.

In a few years maybe, but right now in no situation unfortunately (poor postgrad student).

The format would not bother me at all, nor would time of year probably.

Being a student economy is the main factor for me not attending. A trip to France and back again would be pretty much my food budget for a month :p
It'd definitely be fun though. Don't know if I'd actutally be playing at such a con. I'd probably have more fun running around photographing people's miniatures stealing good ideas for modelling projects and chatting with people. :D That way I won't be reminded just how poor a general I really am :p

As for time of year: The way I see it there is probably 3 times of year that might be suitable:

Mid October: Students will be well into their semester with any exams at least a few months away, so the worst stress will probably be off. Some will aslo have autumn holidays of sorts.

February/March: Same reason as above.

July: Most people have summer holidays sometime that month. Of course heat could be a problem in France. :p  MAny may also have made other holidays plans with friends/family.

Generally speaking December is right outpeople are plenty stressed that month:p  As are april/may/june as these are typical exams periods for students. Same things goes for November/January to some extent.

August may be an option too, but September is also often semester start so people will be busy there as well.

Careful with the end of Semester A exams. I think that the two best times would be over the Easter holidays - although flights are a little more expensive, it is not too bad - and the end of August/September - since again flights are cheaper and it wont clash with other holidays.

Also, what provision do you have for WAGs (wives and girlfriends)? If you can set up a deal with a local spa then it may help couples come across.

Good point CS. Good shopping streets and spa would definitely help convincing the spouse :D

Thanks everyone for your honest responses.  I must admit that Mojarn's comments abou this wife and family, and C/S's comments about facilities for WAGs :p have got me thinking.

In answer to the suggestion about a spa, to be honest I'm not sure there is anything like that here (I'll have to look in to that), we have got a swimming pool and area for sun-bathing; not to mention an out-door dining area too.  Most of our guests have just enjoyed sitting out in the sun, even though there's a great deal to get out and see in the area.  Like many Chateaux, tourist centres with watersports and other activites, and pretty towns like Perigueux with its narrow, medieval streets and plenty of Boutiques ::): and restaurants.

We've tried to gear our facilites to families, not just wargamers, so if anyone wanted to bring their other half and family to an event at ours, there's no reason we can't accomodate what they'd like to do.

In regards to the time of year, I originally chose October for this event for the reasons that WMN.  However, I guess the dates that C/S suggested might be more convenient for more people.

So, any further thoughts?  Thanks for all your input so far!

Personally I think it is a perfect opportunity to leave the WAGs behind and revel in independance... it would almost be like being single, but with the nagging sense that you still have to behave :(.

Ah yes, but some people still require permission and acceptance!  :D

While I dont doubt that WAGs would be fine sunbathing and using the pool, the decision is made before anyone actually arrives. Having a potential list of of attractions really helps. WAGs can potentially sunbath and go in the pool in any number of holiday locations.

If the husband/boyfriend wants to go to this kind of event, most will beed to clear it with their better half. Essentially, why would the WAG want to spend a holiday while their husand/boyfriend is locked in a basement?

I think that it is easy to sell your place to gamers. If you can also sell it to their WAGs, you are on to a winner.

Shopping would be a big plus for WAG's, not to mention lovely French food, wine, scenery, and sharing sob stories with a support group of other WAG's whose partners regress to playing with toy soldiers :D  The best way to sell it might be to make sure the whole trip is not spent playing with the little men...and 'quality couple time' is available...
