Given the hassle involved in traveling long distances, maybe we could identitfy convenient epicenters (heh) of activity and simply force ourselves to have bi-annual epic tourneys at those locations.
Doing that requires at least one person at each location willing to run the tourney and be reliable enough to come through twice a year for the next few years.
I would like to say, for such an event in the middle-TN area,
NOT IT
I was actually thinking about formulating some sort of regional effort where Epic players could match off against each other, and winners could possibly become recipients of airline ticket money that could help them get to the next big event. I think this would require a lot of planning and more time than I have.
For now we have three main areas here on the East Coast.
Connecticut/Massachusetts
Pennsylvania/New Jersey
Maryland/Virginia/DC
MNB,
ronsandt, and I are working on a couple things to encourage more people to play in the larger events. One is top secret (unveiling in January?) but another is the Epic trophy. I envision competitions where teams of 3-5 people compete at events and some pre-described method of calculating a winning team be used. The trophy gets passed around rather than a new one being purchased each time. The fun thing is each competition can be different as long as the participating teams all agree.
Where this gets ugly is when, for example, Team Memphis comes up to play against Team Allentown and Memphis walks with the trophy. Getting it back might require some coin in terms of travel. The balancing act is the team that wins the trophy is required to organize a tournament within x number of months.
