Game 4 black legion (Al), vs Dark Angels (simon), this is the middle of the table in turn 3. It was all looking a bit complicated but i think the marine scouts had just assaulted the chaos retinue with tacticals in support. Marines lost, the black legion then assaulted the tactical with a formation of only 2 bike stands, made all their saves and won with massive supporting fire from the foot retinue.

Yeah, that's pretty much the long and short of it. Possibly the strangest part of the whole exchange was that the only Chaos units in that exchange that didn't survive unscathed were the two Obliterator stands.

That was a cracking weekend. Great to meet everyone. I'll definitely try to get to some more tourneys if I can. Maybe next time I'll actually win some games!

I'm just going through the results to make sure that I got everything right and I'll post them soon.

But Dave won.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend, always a joy to play at EpicUK events. Thanks to Tim for running everything.

Game 1: Simon (H, the other Simon)
Fate (or Tim) bought the two Simons together at the start of the weekend. Simon's Guard were in a less than helpful mood, failing to activate both tank and super hvy companies on turn 1; nor did either warhound fire any shots during the whole game. In a game that was not going Simon's way, he managed to wipe out my BTS with rough riders... ending 2-1 [T3] to me (my only win of the weekend, but at least a Simon won a game!).

Game 2: Steve
Lessons learnt: don't droppod two lots of devs on turn 1, marines don't have the elder's double retain so one formation is effectively dead - and at 400pts that's too much to waste. Also, don't fail to kill the one thing the first droppod devs attack... 10 shots and no kills. I hate dark angel devs. After a bad start I was pleased to keep this as a 0-2 [T3] loss.

Game 3: Tim
I managed to break Tim by declaring my spaceship arriving on turn 2. May be it was a combination of being Sunday morning, and that Tim wanted his spaceship to come in turn 2... but he had a bit of a struggle with how to respond. Sadly, this initial confusion did not save me. I believe this was the bloodiest game I played all weekend, we had many brutal engagements - including a horrible clash of my bts-devs, terminators and assaults against Tim's 6-strong terminators (they are BTS killers). There was very little left on the table at the end turn 3... except of course Tim's two death wheels. I also kept thinking those damn things were DC3... not that it mattered much. My highlight was making all my terminator saves from Tim's sustained decimator. Ended 0-3 [T3] to Tim.

Game 4: Al
Final game rolled in and I made the decision to completely ignore Al's Reaver. Ultimately that meant I wouldn't/couldn't win. Standard marine approach, pick a flank and ignore the other for turn 1 - which really went my way. Turn 2 it began to swing away from me. Al also had a 6-strong terminator formation to pop in... and he won the roll off. Also, the Reaver finally made it from the ignored flank back towards Al's blitz. I did manage to recycle one of my droppod-dev squads ready for turn 3. Turn 3 I opened with a solid attack... airshot the decimator with devs, tick... retain and engage landraiders with assaults and devs in support.... no kills, went into resolution with a +1; to quote Richard... "that's brown trousers time". Al moved his Reaver onto his Blitz and his giant retinue stopped me getting TaH. A final desperate scout clipping assault was attempted... and failed. To which, Al returned the favour with two... TWO bikes against my BTS. Only 4 hits and they made the saves... so the giant (pretty much untouched) retinue supported. End of turn 3 it was 0-0... and sadly we ran out of time. However, even if we had played turn 4 there wasn't much hope of either of us winning... a score draw and almost a dead tie (approx 1550-1450pt).

Four fun, and challenging games.

Game 1 - mintroll

I started off failing multiple activations and getting boxed in to my deployment zone, Simon generally hit my isolated units and kept danger units like warhounds broken, a grand charge from my rough riders wiped out his BTS for no loss and his thunderhawks failed to plink my final broken leman russ which meant it finished aa a 2-1 win to simon

Game 2 - Axel Fendersson

In a bold move Al teleported his terminators in and mauled my shadowsword company right off the bat, the usual poor luck activating, *obscene* saving rolls from Al and some engagements not going my way meant I couldnt snatch the win despite my deathstrikes popping his BTS reaver with ease, a 1-1 losing draw

Game 3 MikeT

I was badly hungover for this and very much not at my best, mike took me apart over the course of this game winning 4-0, based on the utter domination of the centre of the table I think it's very hard to deny that flamers are considerably more powerful than other daemons and deserve rebalancing, my apologies for sulking after the game, a combination of feeling awful and being ravenously hungry affected my mood

Game 4 RichardL

A similar story here, fear of all the lance and macro shooting coupled with the AP firepower of the fire warriors kept me pinned down in my half while richard was able to pick me apart, hammerhead formations being able to take out fully shielded warhounds on an advance are insanely powerful and I had no answers to the list which can out-range you if you sit on overwatch and loves when you march infantry companies up close so it can shred them with massed AP fire

Overall two close games followed by two kickings, I should have taken more warhounds and mechanised infantry and avoided the tank company which was lost in 3 games and reduced to a single model in the 4th

Game 1: Apocolocyntosis (Dark Angels)
First casualty of the game was my supreme commander, who was one of the few units to be caught in the orbital barrage. The early onslaught of drop-podding and air-assaulting marines was painful, but not as bad as it might have been, and things were looking fairly close up until turn 3 when everything fell apart (aside from the Ravager, which defiantly remained standing to the end).
2-0 loss.

Game 2: kyussinchains (Steel Legion)
The dice really didn't seem to be on Simon's side in this one, with a string of failed activations and lucky armour saves allowing my army to surge forwards largely unmolested in the first turn and a half, while teleporting Terminators made a mess of some Shadowswords. The only major exceptions to my lucky streak were some poor rally rolls and a particularly vicious Deathstrike battery, which turned my Titan from undamaged to crater in a single volley. Those kept Simon in the game just well enough that he was able to hold me to a draw.
1-1 winning draw (difference of around 500VP).

Game 3: markHargrave (Squats)
From the outset I had no idea how to deal with Mark's army and consequently I got taken to the cleaners. I brought my Terminators in too early on turn 2; with hindsight I should have kept them in reserve for longer as the need to counter the threat of them teleporting in was at least restricting Mark's movement. Once they did arrive, they were only able to chase a fairly low-priority target and in the event they couldn't even deal with that, as I preceded to lose the strategy roll and they were wiped out before they could do a thing.
4-0 loss.

Game 4: mintroll (Dark Angels)
The orbital barrage was only minimally effective, and while Simon's initial surge was strong, it stalled as the game went on. By turn three both our armies were looking the worse for wear. Some very odd assault results in the centre of the board (apparently I can make saves when the odds are 3-1 against me, but not when they're 3-1 in my favour) left neither of us in a position to secure a win, and although we ran out of time at the end of turn 3, odds are we'd still have been left with at best a 1-1 draw even if we'd been able to play out the remaining turn.
0-0 draw (difference of around 100VP)

Thanks to Tim for organising, and to everyone there for making my first tournament a great experience.
