For anyone who thought there might be Epic at the Baltimore Games Day, I can officially tell you it will not be happening.

I didn't think it was, but I emailed them just in case. ?For your entertainment (or an example of how big of a mule I can be), I have included my correspondence with GW here...
--
Howdy,

Could you tell me if the Baltimore Games Day event will include an Epic Tournament at all? ?I know the Chicago and Memphis events have Epic included, but little if anything can be found online.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Hello,

Assuming you are referring to Games Day or the Grand Tournaments as events, there are no plans to have an Epic Tournament at any of those events. ?The Memphis and Chicago bunkers may have small Epic Tournaments, but Baltimore does not have enough Epic players to run an event.

Thanks!

John Spencer
Customer Service Specialist

--
Chicago's Adepticon is hosting one - I don't know if that is one in the same but...

With that said, I believe you could get a minimum of 8 players for the Baltimore area and probably closer to 16 if you opened up some table space for us. :) ?I know of at least 4 people who live within an hour of Baltimore and 5 more who would be willing to travel (including me). ?And those are just the people I know about.

Listen to the whisper through the corn stalks- If you make it, we will pay... :)

Any way you can propose it to the tournament organizers? ?With the date still far out there I bet something could be put together rather easily.

Think you can help out us Epic folks?

Hello,

There will be open gaming available at Baltimore Games Day, but there are no plans to have tournaments for games other than our core games (Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, and Lord of the Rings).

--
Can the open tables be reserved at all? ?Maybe two or three of them for Epic?

Hello,

Unfortunately, no. ?They are first come first serve. ?We try and rotate people through the tables to give everyone a chance to play.

Thanks!

--
I hate to be a stickler but your original email stated that Baltimore doesn't have enough Epic players to run such an event. ?How many people would you need to express an interest in order to consider it 'enough' to have an Epic tournament?

I don?t know exact numbers. ?But I can honestly say that it is highly unlikely there will ever be enough in the Baltimore area to warrant an Epic Tournament at Games Day. ?
--
Wow. ?So you are basically saying that no matter whether 8 people or 80 people show an expressed interest in Epic being played that Games Day won't support them.

Stunning. ?While I appreciate your quick response, I would have appreciated a more honest one which is GW isn't interested in supporting its Epic customers. ?Ironic, since Epic (i.e. Space Marines) was around long before 40K. ?Am I correct in assuming this email will most likely never be seen by anyone organizing Games Day?

Hello,

Well, let me explain our business plan. ?Basically, our plan for supporting items looks like a cone. ?At the large end are our Core games (40K, Warhammer Fantasy and Lord of the Rings) and at the other (small) end are all the Specialist Games. ?Specialist Games are not our focus. ?We put as much support as we can into them(which right now is very minimal), but we are concentrating on our Core games. ?

Also, we will make sure that the organizers of Games Day see your email.

Well, Moscovian, I'm going to be at GW Baltimore. So maybe we can find an open table!

Well, why don't we use this thread. How many other Epic players are going to Baltimore and would like to participate in an Epic Tournament. Your email might have more weight if you DO have 20 people that would participate in a tournie.

Mosc, I admire your persistence. Once again GW has shown their stupidity.

EDIT: Sorry, Baltimore is too far away for me to attend.

I'd go for a game or two.  It's only a few hours away.

Hi guys

I was directed to this site (and this thread in particular) by some of the guys in the office. My name is Dave Taylor and I'm the Community Development Manager for GW US. Part of my job is organizing Games Days for the US, so I figured I should drop in for a chat.

In essence a number of things that John Spencer said were correct. We currently are not set-up/equipped to run an Epic tournament at Baltimore Games Day (or our other Games Days for that matter). However, we are in the position to chat with someone who would be interested in running a tournament (around 10-12 people in size).

We would be able to provide the folding tables, chairs, some prizes, and most likely the tabletops, but we are currently without Epic experts to run the event and Epic terrain, that's obviously where you guys would come in.

I'm guessing these forums have members across the US who play Epic, so we'll happily spitball with people about events you'd like to run at any Games Day in the US. By "we" I mean myself and the rest of the Community Development Team.

Let me know what you think here, or you can email me directly at dave.taylor@games-workshop.com.

Cheers
Dave Taylor
GW US Community Development Manager

@Moscovian you have such a way with people :).  Nice job though, let me know how this plays out, I'd be interested in attending if the time was right.

@Dave, thank you.  That's great news. Terrain and expertise I think we can handle.

Thanks, Dave, and welcome.

I think the major point of concern is that responses like the ones Moscovian described are not uncommon.  Many of the regulars here have reported indifference or outright hostility to the idea of Specialist games at GW events or on store premises.  To be fair, it seems to be more common in the UK than in the US but it does happen and it's been frequent enough that it has engendered some hard feelings.

A fairly large portion of us have run tournaments, large demos, or other substantial events.  In general, I'd say most people only need minimal support - space and a flat surface - and can provide everything else.  More important than direct support is cooperation.  Though prizes are, of course, greatly appreciated. :;):

Also, it's important to note that the negative experiences are not universal.  The store in Nashville (before it closed) and the Memphis Bunker have both treated Epic players well and the Nashville store did a good job of rotating through SG leagues in addition to the WFB, 40K, and LotR.  (If you have a way of passing on kudos inside the company for employee evaluations and such, I have nothing but praise for Jamie Pirozzolo, manager for the Memphis Bunker.)

I think it's great that you took the time to show up here and I hope that it's a sign of good things to come.  Thanks again.

Well, thank you very much for coming out of your way for us.

What in particular would you need? Someone to run the thing, obviously. Is there a particular format for the competition we need to follow or can we just make it up? Can the organisers participate also?

That sounds very promising. I'm certainly going to be there and I don't mind helping out. I know the Epic rules, although not so much about running tournaments. Moscovian, sounds like you volunteered to run the thing!  :p

Well, I wasn't expecting THAT. :p  For the first time in a long time, I am speechless.

Davetaylor, as the boat rocker who started this... Uhm, thanks?  I'll email you after conferring with my colleagues here.

Guys, at my company we have a policy that whoever suggests something is obligated to take the lead.  With that said (and in case Davetaylor is expecting us to email him), do you have any suggestions for Baltimore?  I ran the tournament back in CT a couple years back, but that was a fast and loose thing.  I'm open to suggestions at this point.  I've got lots o' terrain... :D

My only suggestion is to move it closer to me.

Several quick thoughts:-

You have a little time for preparation as it is June 14, so a "formal" approach is going to be viable, and I would recommend getting people to apply in order for you to get numbers etc.

Over in the UK Matt Otter runs a number of very successfull tournaments. I can strongly recommend the rules pack he uses which can be found at the WPS site in the "rule sets" option of the "WPS stuff" drop-down. Amoung other things it covers, we use the latest online set of rules, FAQ and the "official" army lists from the SG silte both because they are more widely accessed by public, and less volotile (and they are of course part of GW aren't they :p ).

My only other suggestion would be free airline tickets and accomodation for those of us outside the US who would nevertheless like to join in the party, and especially so we could all enjoy watching a speechless man run the tournament

I agree with the free airline tickets for those of us a bit far away (I didn't know ponds were so big).

and Ginger I am sure that Moscovian will use sign language.  I just hope he has enough 'elperz to carry all the signs he will need.  :p
