Battle 7 of those fought as part of my Epic War! Campaign. To find out more about the Campaign, please see this thread;

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=24706

Which units were used for this battle can be found on the campaign force lists in the same thread. To help, the Marine force used was under code M81, the Eldar E6.

The battle was fought on city terrain (H7 on Campaign Map). The Marine army was on First Fire orders and the Eldar on Advance. The Marine player could deploy an extra 15cm forward of the standard deployment zone and would automatically have initiative on turn 1 of the battle. The Marines can set up their defences anywhere on their half of the board. The Eldar set up within the standard deployment zone.

Both sides fielded fresh armies worth 4,000 points each. To secure a win, one side must score 45VPs.

Turn 1:

On the left flank Eldar Jet Bikes clash with Land Speeders. The Speeders get the better of the encounter, while Land Raiders dug in behind defensive entrenchments eliminate the two remaining Jet Bikes. Dark Reapers and Marine Tactical Troops capture objectives in the two large buildings facing one another.
In the centre of the board, the Eldar use their speed to their advantage, securing three objectives with Exarchs, Guardians and Striking Scorpions respectively. The Warlock attempts to protect the Spirit Host by casting an Eldrich Storm in the centre of the freeway. However, a combination of Predators, Land Raiders and Devastator troops find they still have line of sight to some of the Wraithguard and Wraithlords and manage to inflict some losses upon the advancing host. The Eldar Warlock Titan unleashes Pulsar barrages on buildings teeming with Devastators and reduces one of these to rubble.
The right flank sees much maneouvering but little combat as the Marines seek to defend an objective with a combination of Terminators and Assault troops.

Marines: 17VPs
Eldar: 25VPs

Turn 2:
The Marines are in full defensive mode with pretty much the whole force on First Fire orders and their Reaver cowering behind a building to evade the approaching Warlock Titan's deadly Pulsar weaponry. Frustratingly for the Marines, they find targets few and far between. They do manage to eliminate the Dark Reapers on the left flank, and continue to inflict losses on the Spirit Host. The Eldar shore up the objectives that they have already seized, but also find inflicting casualties upon the humans to be incredibly difficult.

Marines: 20VPs
Eldar: 25VPs

Turn 3:

The game continues to be incredibly cagey with the Marines dug in and the Eldar cautiously advancing with both sides picking off the odd enemy units. It's a slow war of attrition with the Marines losing one squad of Land Speeders and a unit of bikes.

Marines: 20VPs
Eldar: 29VPs

Turn 4:

Harlequins are made to pay a high price as they charge Tactical Troops on the left flank, while their Warlock makes a fatal error by moving to the edge of a nearby wood. Now the closest target for the Reaver Titan, the Warlock is unable to evade the Reaver's twin Turbo-Laser Destructors and the Spirit Host finally breaks. The patience of the Marines also pays off as the Defender and Grav-Tank Hosts also break, as do Striking Scorpions who are caught in no-man's land.
The Marines also suffer heavy losses this turn as their last Land Speeder squadron is broken, and a combination of the Harlequin attack on the left flank and the Howling Banshees on the right inflict enough punishment to smash a Battle Company. The most audacious move of the turn comes from the Walorck Titan who wades into a wood on the right flank, and stomps on two Terminator stands to break that unit.
In terms of casualties, the battle is incredibly close, but with the Marines charging Rhino vehicles, several objectives are seized and the battle won.

Marines: 48VPs
Eldar: 34VPs

Thanks for another enjoyable report.

I'm surprised that the Eldar did as well as they did to be honest, since a war of attrition is almost impossible for them to win. The loss of that Warlock stand was incredibly costly when you look at the the victory point difference. It's always imperative to keep the Warlock stand of the Spirit Host hidden.

Glad you found it of interest, only a few more to write up to bring the campaign to a conclusion!

By and large my brother did a great job of doing just that throughout the campaign. I think this was the first time I had managed to kill the Warlock and grab those precious VPs! It was a bit childish but I did let out a cheer when I got the little blighter!

Not childish, you just got caught up in the moment :).

I've lost my Warlock on some occasions in the past too. It's not possible to protect him all the time, but it always hurts giving away so many victory points for one stand.

Yes, but the number of times during the campaign where I had pretty much wiped out the host but never got the points because the Warlock was hiding in woods or a building was unbelievable (and unbelievably frustrating)! For years I wasn't a fan of Warlocks but I don't know why, they are about as powerful a unit as you can get for 100 points!

As a footnote to this report, it is worth mentioning that I (the Marines) broke another 5 VPs worth of Eldar as they were in the process of fleeing the battlefield (in fall back mode). Anyone following my campaign rules thread will probably be aware that the rules for withdrawal have been somewhat tweaked, making it more difficult in the turns after the "end" of the battle for the victor to engage in widespread slaughter.
Given the fact that I was playing catch-up overall in the campaign, these additional points were very much welcomed by me!
