Turn 1 – IG win Initiative
IG – Shadowsword #1 doubles and shoots Manta (2 wounds, 3 blast)

Tau – Retain – Fire Warrior w commander hold (move and rally) to get out of LOS of Leviathan
IG – Kasrkin #2 hold (move and rally), wanted to move up and put a blast on Supremancy

Tau – Manta move and shoot markerlit Shadow Sword #2 destroying it
IG – Hyrda marshal and shoot Recon #1 (1 blast), here is a mistake we caught in turn 2 we realized that the hydras were in the ZOC of the Recon and therefore had to do a marshal and move.
Tau – Stealth Battlesuits march to ruins lighting several units up with markerlight
IG - Warlord Titan double moves (to within 11 cm of Stealth Battlesuits) and shoots Manta (4 DC damage and ciritical on shield, breaking Manta (which withdraws straight back to home table edge)
Tau – Recon #2 doubles and shoots (using Supreme Commander reroll) markerlit Warlord Titan (1 blast)
Tau – Retain with Supremancy #2 sustain on hellhound (1 blast) (1 kill, 2 blast)

Tau – Skyray sustain on markerlit Warlord Titan (2 shield, 1 blast, total 2 blast)
IG – Hellhound double and shoot Recon #2 (1 kill, 2 blast)
Tau – Riptides double and shoot markerlit Shadowsword #1 (kill with critical) and jet pack out of LOS into Buildings
IG – Leviathan double and shoot Supremacy #1 (1 DC damange, 2 blast)
Tau – Tiger Shark hold (was going to strafe Warlord titan)
IG - Kasrkin #1 hold and rally (was going to engage Recon #1)
Tau – Orca ground attack Hyrda (1 blast , total 2 blast)
IG – Sentinels #2 march move up to center behind woods
IG – Thunderbolts ground attack Recon #2 (kill 2, break Recon #2 which withdraws to Tau Blitz)

IG – Retain with Vasrkin #1 engage (with supporting fire from Hydra) Recon #1 (eliminate Recon #1 and 1 dead Vasrkin, 1 blast)
Tau – Supremacy #1 marshal and move (into woods) remove all blast

Turn 3 – Tau win initiative
Tau - Manta moves and shoots on Warlord Titan ( 1 shield (0 shield left), 1 blast marker, total of 5 blast markers)
Tau – Retain with Tiger Shark and ground attack Warlord Titan (1 DC damage, 5 DC left, 2 blast, total of 7 blast markers)
IG – Warlord titan sustains on Manta (eliminates Manta)

Game was called a Cadian win at this point due to most likely (due to lack of markerlights and ability to threaten objectives) outcome of:

Cadian – BTS and Take and Hold or Defend the Flag

Tau – with Orca ground assault with Firewarriors could possibly postpone till turn 4 by denying one or both of Take and hold or Defend the Flag and They Shall Not Pass

Comments:

Challenging and close game as always against Atension. Game could have had a very different outcome if Atension had been able to improve his die roll by +1 on multiple occasions.

The game swung on the epic battle between the Manta “The Greatest Good” and Warlord Titan “The Emperors Judgement” with the Tau just needing 1 more blast marker on the Warlord to tip the game significantly in the Tau’s favor (ie breaking the Titan in turn 3 before it had a chance to act thereby preserving the Manta and therefore putting that whole Cadian right flank and war effort in jeopardy (ie BTS, Blitz, Defend the Flag and Take and Hold as well as They Shall not Pass would no longer be attainable by the Cadians)

Being a long time IG Steel Legion player I feel that the Cadian list seemed balanced. All the formations seemed to pass the sniff test. I did not get a chance to really stress test how the individual formations performed in this game (sentinels, hellhounds and Leviathan). Also my usual style of play involved more formation and this is only the second time I have used a warlord titan in 4 years. I based the list off of Beefcake4000 Cadian list.

Having played about ~9 games against Tau (Dobbsy) many moons ago using Imperial Guard I can say that the play style of the Vior’la Tau bring several significant changes to the Tau play style that they did not have before. In this game they were:
- Barrage templates (this is a big one) (Supremacy)
- Significant indirect accurate fire (3+) that reached from deployment zone to deployment zone (Supremacy)
- Cheaper Recon formations with markerlights
- LOTS of toys (I was surprised at all the exotic units that are typically restricted to the 1/3 of points allies/air force section), in this battle there was a Manta, Orca, Tiger Shark, Riptides and 2 Supremacy formations
- Orca did not make an appearance but would have been decisive especially in conjunction with Supremacy prep for assault.

More comments on the respective army lists in the Cadian and Vior’La Tau forums.

Was an interesting (though at times frustrating) game but certainly fun regardless. I made a list mistake (as I somehow forgot to bring all my rules and list) intending to try out the stormsurges and an extra recon formation in place of the Riptides, got it a little mixed up when trying to recreate from memory (Hence the 100 extra points).
I made the plan to test the Tau metal at taking out a warlord at the beginning of the match to see the potency of the Manta and the AX-1-0. The AX standing down then missing with the TK weapon the second turn was brutal bad luck. It clearly would have been smarter strategy to avoid the warlord as much as possible and focus on reducing Paradox's popcorn formations. This wouldn't have been too hard with the Supremacy suits superior range and Barrage. Then I could have just zipped in some Recons or dropped some fire warriors to contest any points it might be gaining him.

You wrote "Hold (move and rally)" a couple of times. You can either shed the BM, move or shoot ehen you hold. Don't know if you played it like that.

My mistake. I believe those should have been described as Marshal Actions (move then regroup) in the write up.

But the Manta, Orca and Tiger Shark AX-1-0 are all in the 1/3 restricted section.
And lots of other armies have DC2 and DC3 class WEs not in that section: Shadowswords and other SHTs, Engines of Vaul, Super Stompas and Gunfortresses, etc

Having had this occur rather frequently I investigate the probabilities in more depth and concluded that it was not all that uncommon an event. Not exactly in the form that you experienced but in some form. Often, due to BMs from flak and then failing the activation test, or being shot down (only takes one hit through the armour), or needing to shoot into cover.
