SS(4) in webway. Archon & Kabal(1) in webway. Scourge in Slavebringer. Spacecraft set for turn 1.
This list was set up to test if multiple formations of Aspect Warriors and small formations of Wraiths could be over powerful. Iyanden set up was in two groups with AA cover.
Turn 1 – SR to DE
1. DE – Spacecraft activates, barrage hits both Cobras 2 BM, WG(BTS) – 1 hit on Supreme Commander which kills him & breaks formation plus SS(1) 1 hit kills a SS and breaks the formation. All stay still. Single pin-point shoots Cobra (2) 1 extra BM breaks the formation.
Question here which we couldn’t remember the answer to – Does a pin-point from the spacecraft following a Barrage hit cause an extra BM? I appreciate that SM drop pods do, but does different shots from a spacecraft.
Plus this was an ouch moment when I considered saying this just isn’t going to work, but a test is a test so on we went.
2. Iy – Vampire Raider attempts to ground attack & fails, so stands down.
3. DE – Razorwings (1) ground attack Cobra (1) take 1 BM from AA wounds the cobra breaking it.
4. Iy – WB (2) march forwards into cover
5. DE – VoP doubles and moves, shoots WB(2) and moves – 1BM
6. Iy – WB(1) march – fail and take BM and move forwards
7. DE – Kabal (2) doubles forward behind cover
8. Iy – WG(2) march forward
9. DE – Razorwings(2) ground attack SS(3) – 1 hit saved – 1BM
10. Iy – SoV double & take a shot at Kabal(2) for a BM
11. DE – Ravagers(1) double forwards and shoot at 1 Facon from SoV, 3 hits 1 dead and 2BM
12. Iy – Aspects SW double to form a shield in front of broken formations
13. DE – Ravagers (2) double forward and shoot WG(2) – 1 BM
14. Iy – SS(3) regroup, shuffle forwards and remove BM
15. DE – Slavebringer with Scourge assaults WG(2) – 2 Scourge die, Wraithseer dies, DE win and WG(2) breaks. Scourge move forward into cover
16. Iy – SS(4) engages Kabal(2) out of the webway. No DE hts, SS hit twice and kill two Warriors. SS win by 2, Kabal breaks and runs away. SS consolidate and lose one of their number to a Difficult Terrain Test (double 1)
17. Iy – SS(2) engage Scourge (Scourge placement had been a mistake) 2 Scourge die and rest are wiped out in resolution. SS(2) advance forwards.
18. DE – Mandrakes double forward
19. DE – Archon engages WG(2) out of Webway, 1 Incubi dies, 2 WGuard die. Archon wins and bounces back behind cover. Lone WG falls back.
Archon rallies, WB(2) rally, Kabal(2) rally, WB(1) rally, WG(2) rally, SS(1) fail, WG(BTS) rally, SoV rally, Cobra(2) rally & Cobra(1) rallies.
Well that was a turn and a half. The 6BP from the spacecraft gave an extra BM which really hurt my small formations – I should have spread out more. Engagements, even though I lost two, went my way and I had a brilliant rally phase.
Turn 2 Avatar summoned - SR to Iy (Game on)
1. Iy – SS(4) engage Mandrakes, clipping 2. They lose one and kill one. Mandrakes win roll off and wipe out SS(4). Mandrakes move forward blocking possible Avatar engagement of Ravagers. (Oops that went wrong)
2. Iy – WB(2) engage the now in range Mandrakes. WB save 2 hits and wipe out the Mandrakes. BM on Ravagers (2).
3. Iy – SoV sustain on Ravagers (1), 2 hits killing 2 which break the formation which falls back to the Blitz.
4. DE – Ravagers (2) double (move, shoot, move) fire on SS(2), 1 hit 1 dead – 2BM and then foll back
5. DE – Archon engage the Avatar get two wounds through whilst Avatar misses. Archon wins and Avatar breaks.
6. Iy – Cobra(2) doubles and shoots Archon – 2 Incubi die, 3BM
7. DE – Razorwings (2) CAP
8. DE – VoP doubles and shoots SS(2), 1 TK hit remaining 2 break and run away.
9. Iy – Cobra (1) doubles and shoots Archon – Archon dies, and formation breaks and runs away
10. DE – Razorwings(1) ground attack, but fail and stand down
11. Iy – WG(2) doubles and shoots VoP stripping a shield – 1BM
12. Iy – WB(1) engage VoP – fail and remove BM
13. DE – Slavebringer ground attacks Cobra(2) which takes a wound and breaks, falling back
14. Iy – SS(3) go onto overwatch
15. DE – Kabal(2) regroup, fail and just remove BM
16. Iy – Vampire Raider ground attacks, are CAPPED, suffers 3 hits which are not saved & VR dies. Razorwings take a BM from AA.
17. DE – Kabal(1) engage out of webway attacking WB(2) – no hits, DE win roll-off, WB(2) break and run away.
18. Iy – WG(BTS) march
Does the formation lose its 1+ initiative if the Wraithseer dies?
19. Iy – Swooping Hawks march towards DE Blitz.
No aircraft lost in fly offs.
SS(2) fail, VoP rallies, Cobra(2) fails, Ravagers(1) rally, WG(BTS) fail, Ravagers rally, Cobra(1) rallies, Archon fails, SoV fails, WB fail & SS(1) rallies.
Turn 3 - SR to DE
1. DE – VoP advances and shoots Cobra(1), 2 TK hits and destroys it.
2. DE – Kabal (1) engages Cobra(2) 5 hits and destroys it. 1 hit back is saved. WG(2) breaks from BM for being in a position to support.
3. Iy – SwHawks engage Ravagers on Blitz, 1 SH dies and lose roll-off by 1, 2 SW run away.
4. DE – Razorwing ground attacks WG(BTS) for a BM
5. Iy – WG(BTS) regroup, fail and break
6. DE – Slavebringer ground attacks SoV, loses a shield from AA, SoV take a BM
7. Iy – SoV sustain at VoP – no hits – 1 BM
8. Iy – WB(2) engages VoP, no hits, WB(2) win by 2 and the VoP breaks and falls back. WB run back to their Blitz
9. DE – Razorwing ground attack, lose 1 to AA shoot at SS(3) for a BM
10. Iy – SS(1) regroup, advance to an objective and remove all BM
11. DE – Ravagers (2) go onto Overwatch
12. Iy – SS(3) advance
13. DE – Ravagers (1) advance and shoot WG(2) no hits
14. DE – Kabal(2) double and shoot SS(3) for a BM
VoP rallies, WG(2) fails, Archon rallies, SHawks rally, Ravagers(1) fail, WB(2) fail, SoV fail, WG(BTS) rally, SS(3) fail
Turn 4 – SR to DE
1. DE – Kabal(1) engage SoV, 1 dead raider, DE win by 2 and SoV break
2. DE – Kabal(2) engage SS(3), fail, take BM and shoot SS(3) for a BM
3. Iy – WG(BTS) double & fail, remove BM instead.
4. DE – Razorwings ground attack SHawks to break them
5. Iy – SS(1) engage Kabal(2) no hits at all SS win by 2 & Kabal breaks
6. DE – Razorwings fails to activate and stands down
7. Iy – WB(2) go onto overwatch
8. DE – Slavebringer ground attacks, lands to contest Blitz and shoots SS(2) killing one which breaks the others
9. Iy – SS(3) regroup into DE half and remove all BM
10. DE – VoP doubles, fails and shoots WG(2) instead killing last unit.
11. DE – Ravagers double and shoot WB(2) for a BM
12. DE – Archon formation fails to activate
13. DE – Ravagers advance and fire on SHawks to try and kill them off.
End of game 0-0. Points to DE 1560 to 900.
So the Iyanden didn’t get to truly try out multiple activations of aspects with the DE breaking four formations with their first two activations. However with the good rallying at the end of the turn and the strategy at the start of turn 2 the list showed how deadly the Eldar can be.
However, the army felt fragile, if they had been facing a more shooty army things could well have been very messy for the Iyanden.
Final thought, Wraithseer +1 to Initiative is not needed.
