wow, sounds like the 'nids got outfoxed at every turn. I get the sense that the mycetic drop worked heavily against them here - the few fms on board got a pasting while the dropping swarms largely got picked off piecemeal. Any thoughts about that?

Also, why did you bring on your Trygons so far back (by the looks of it anyway)? Why not go for the blitz and those lovely soft Whirlwinds?

Matt took the 'nids for this one. I can't speak for him but I've been holding off on tunneling the Trygons in on the third turn because there's usually something for them to mess with on the second. Also, if they're coming in on the third it's very likely they're going for the blitz, so we've seen a lot of Scout formations being pulled back at the end of the second to cover that angle of attack.

I'm not sure I'd use the word "outfoxed", but yeah after my BTS ate Dave's BTS, it was all downhill in the dropping swarm department. I tried three times to drop on top of his blitz and those "soft" Whirlwinds, and was boned every time by inordinately unlucky scattering. Not once did a scatter arrow point towards Dave's board edge, with the result that I ended up on top of one of his more expendable units, rather than the blitz.

As for the trygons, I had them come up as far as the could in turn 2, just short of mid-board. I had gone for the blitz with them in the past, and thought the tunnelers would be more useful in eating something in the middle of the board near mine and Dave's TNH objectives. Little did I know that 1) the trygons would surface and do little more than fail saves and die; and 2) the gobs of points I aimed for his blitz would fail to meet even pessimistic expectations.

hmm, thought I recognised Dave's irritating use of Land Speeders there. Sounds like the drop mechanic is even more random than anyone realised :)

Good. The question is do we want to keep that as a special rule or just make it scenario specific. Time will tell I suppose.

What? Dave's irritating use of Land Speeders? I think that should be banned outright :)

As for the drop rules, I like how random they are, but there's the question of randomness accurately representing an event and randomness deciding who wins the game. The first is obviously fun and I'm guessing what Dave's striving for, the latter would just be irritating.

Granted I've played against Onachus only once, but I like the drop rules far better than the old Phase III list. The randomness is a good balance for being able to drop units anywhere on the board. However, I can see how bad luck would make it difficult for the Tyranids to win.

Dave and I had another battle last night, this time with the new stats but also trying out the drop army. I'm sure a batrep will be up soon, but suffice it to say that I was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I played IG and Dave took tyranids. He failed to bring in two of his swarms on turn 3, but I was unable to finish off his BTS's lone carnifex for a 2-0 win. It went to turn 4, both swarms came in, and it eventually went to points. This was the 3rd time (I believe) that swarms failed to arrive before "overtime", but the 'nids still hung around for the win/draw. Even when it's over, it's not over ;)

Heh, ya that rep will be up soon. It started off with poor 'nid luck and ended with poor guard luck, a very quirky game.
