Turn One The battle begins with the Eldar taking the initiative. Spear out of Eons opened fire at Epsilon squadron; the Predators opposite his position on the east flank, and destroyed two with his titan pulsars. The Whirlwind battery in the centre returned fire at Spear, keen to avenge their fallen brothers, but the sustained barrage impacted harmlessly against the Phantom’s armour. Autumn of Our Days moved forward towards a central objective and also targeted Epsilon squadron, destroying the last two. The second Predator squadron, Echo, moved forward through the ruined suburbs to bring their guns to bear against Autumn, but couldn’t get the range. The Revenants Winterseed and Ghost Crow moved forward to secure the objective in the narrow valley and fire some long range shots at the Predators. They were not quite as successful as their larger brothers and only a single tank was destroyed. A squadron of Novamarine Land Raiders moved up to support the Predators, opening fire on the distant Revenants with their lascannons. Winterseed escaped unscathed but Ghost Crow took two damaging hits. The Revenants signalled for aid against the fearsome Land Raiders and the Wraithlord Troupe answered (with some encouragement from supreme commander Clan-Prince Galathaniel). However their bright lance fire could not quite reach the armoured beasts of the Novamarines. In the centre of the battlefield the Sergeant Santiagon, bearing the company banner, led his Tactical detachment in an advance further into the ruined city. As they moved, they took some long ranged shots with their missile launchers at Winterseed and Ghost Crow, but to no avail. This unwarranted aggression was met by the Revenant team Hawk and Falcon who leapt forward on blazing jump jets from their concealed position behind the cathedral to pepper the Tactical formation with fire, but the Marines were now too entrenched for their fire to be much of a threat. Deciding to lead by example Clan-Prince Galathaniel retained the initiative and ordered his Warlock forward into the heart of the city to deal with the upstart Tactical formation himself. The ruined buildings proved no defence against the power of the Warlock’s psychic lance, and three units were destroyed. Meanwhile on the west flank a convoy of vehicle advanced across the broken ground. A formation of Terminators in their Land Raider transports, led by Chapter Master Teublitz himself manoeuvred to place themselves on the opposite side of the cathedral while the Devastator formation retained the initiative and advanced in their Rhinos to seize the objective in the Eldar’s half of the table. Keen to meet a worthy foe in battle, the princeps of the Reaver titan Coronus ordered his mighty war construct into weapons range of Hymn to Rebirth, the Clan-Prince’s Warlock titan. A mighty firestorm erupted from the Reaver’s arms and carapace, but only succeeded in causing minor damage to the Eldar titan. Finally Reclusiarch Highheart’s formation of Assault Marines moved up into the shadow of the Cathedral, taking cover under the gaze of the statue of Varan, an Ultramarines hero from long ago... The battle is only just getting started, and all who came under fire this turn managed to rally or regroup, still keen to engage the enemy. The only exceptions were the surviving Predators of Echo squadron, who are seemingly unable to regroup in the face over overwhelming Eldar firepower. |

Turn Two Scanning the battlefield, the Eldar Clan-Prince decided that Coronus was the biggest threat to his war engines, despite its obvious crudeness. He signalled to Hawk and Falcon who leapt back of the cathedral to unleash their pulsars and knock down two shields before once more seeking cover behind the monolithic building. Choosing to act swiftly, Galathaniel used all his influence as supreme commander to retain the initiative and advance towards the Reaver. Demonstrating the meaning of the word ‘firepower’ to the humans, the Warlock unleashed all its weapons against the enemy titan, knocking down the shields then destroying it completely in a spectacular firestorm. The initiative stayed with the Eldar as Spear pivoted to target the Land Raiders of Enable squadron, who were approaching on the east flank. However the armour of the Land Raiders proved too tough. Spear retreated to secure the objective Eldar home objective. At last it was time for the Novamarines to act, and the Land Raider squadron that had just come under fire responded in kind, targeting Winterseed and forcing the Revenant to withdraw back towards the Eldar lines. The Wraithlord Troupe continued their ponderous advance, finally opening fire on Echo squadron and forcing them to withdraw. At the centre of the battle, the survivors of the foremost Tactical formation gathered around Santiagon with the company banner and returned fire at the Warlock, catching it in a crossfire with the assault marines, although they failed to cause any damage. Keen to protect his Clan-Prince, the pilot of Autumn returned fire against the Tactical formation, destroying another unit and their Rhino transport. Their advance having gone un-noticed by the Eldar, the Assault formation activated their jump packs and soared out from behind the cathedral and landed in a building behind the Warlock titan, preparing to catch it in a crossfire with the second advancing Tactical formation, led by the indefatigable Captain Mercian. The plan worked and the Tacticals opened up on the Warlock, but again to no effect. The Whirlwinds lent their firepower to the infantry’s efforts to fell this mighty war engine, but they could do no damage either. It took the intervention of the Novamarines chapter master to finally threaten the Warlock. With a rousing battle-cry the Novamarine Terminators disembarked and added their firepower to that of their transports. When the smoke cleared the Warlock had two new gaping holes in with wraithbone carapace and was forced to withdraw past the Assault formation back towards Eldar lines. Battle fatigue was beginning to show, and neither Hymn, Winterseed or the banner-bearing Tactical formation were able to rally. All other formations regrouped successfully. |

Turn Three Sensing the tide was turning, the Novamarines went on the offensive, peppering the Wraithlord Troupe with a long range barrage, although the spirit warriors proved too resilient to the missiles and sustained no damage. However they proved less resilient to Land Raider Enable squadron, which retained the initiative and opened fire with their lascannons, finally obliterating one of the Wraithlords. Keen to force the Marines out of their lines, Hawk and Falcon moved forward to engage the Assault formation. Highheart’s infantry proved no match for the towering war engines and half their number was ground into the dust, forcing the survivors to withdraw into the shadow of the cathederal. Marshalling around their banner, the Tactical formation in the regrouped and opened fire on Autumn, although once again their missile launcher proved ineffective against titan armour and holofields. Disdainfully ignoring their fire, Autumn targeted his weapon systems again the Land Raiders on the east flank but failed to cause any damage. With the Warlock titan still clearly in disarray, the master of the Novamarines saw an opportunity to retake more of the shattered city. With a prayer to the Emperor for strength on his lips he signalled his Terminator retinue to engage the nearby Revenants. His faith was rewarded as Falcon was felled by repeated power fist attacks to the legs, forcing Hawk to withdraw in disarray. Teublitz and his stern-faced veterans dug into the hab-block, determined to hold. Back on the east flank, the Wraithlords continued to advance towards the nearest objective… …and were at last able to destroy a Land Raider with their bright lances. The nearby Predators of Echo squadron tried to return fire against the Wraithlords, but could not score any damage. In the centre Spear unleashed a sustained torrent of firepower against the Terminators and Land Raiders who had attacked the Revenants, succeeding in destroying two of the tanks. On the west flank, Codicer Herzog ordered the Devastator formation to unleash their heavy weapons against Hawk who had foolishly landed in their line of sight as he fled the Terminators. Two direct hits were stored, leaving Hawk barely standing. Finally, Captain Mercian ordered his Tactical formation to mount up, and in a bold strike to bolster the crumbling east flank, the courageous marines captured the crossroads objective. Firing from the hip, the Astartes opened fire at the Wraithlords. Although unable to permanently damage any of them, the Tactical marines finally forced the constructs to withdraw due to sheer volume of incoming fire. The withdrawal did not last for long though, and the Wraithlord Troupe quickly rallied, as did Hymn to Rebirth and the surviving Revenant on the west flank, Hawk. The fight still hung in the balance with neither side being able to complete or claim any objectives. |

Turn Four The Novamarines could sense blood in the water now, and moved in for the kill. Chapter Master Teublitz gritted his teeth and led his Terminators and Land Raiders in to engage the Warlock; determined to exact vengeance for the fallen Coronus. Their courage was once again rewarded by the Emperor; although two units of Terminators were crushed to death, the fragile legs of the Warlock were simply no match for the brutal destructive power of the chainfist. With an echoing crash and the sound of smashing porcelain, the Warlock crashed down amidst the ruins of a hab-block. The chapter master immediately ordered a search for the body of his Eldar counterpart amongst the ruins, but it could not be found. Seeing the success his Master had enjoyed, Sergeant Santiagon tried to rally his battered Tactical marines to retain the initiative, but was unsuccessful. A ripple of firepower washed out from the ruins at Autumn to little effect. Angered by the destruction of Hymn to Rebirth and keen for revenge, Autumn of Our Days engaged the Captain Mercian’s Tactical formation, storming into the rubble of the ruins with feet swinging and fist lasers blazing. Undaunted by the titanic War Engine bearing down on him, Captain Mercian led a brutal counter-charge. The Xenos Engine swept aside marine after marine, but the damage they were causing began to tell. Forced to rely on his Iron Halo twice to save himself from being vaporised, Mercian bolstered his men to ensure Autumn of Our Days could not gain the upper hand. It finally became apparent that the Novamarines had won the engagement, but the fearless Autumn of Our Days stubbornly refused to withdraw, the Eldar steersman’s face twisted into a snarl that contrasted with Mercian’s battered but stoic formation. As the combat raged at the heart of the city, the Whirlwinds launched another sustained barrage against the Wraithlords, but once more the Eldar machines emerged physically unscathed, although the same could not be said for their morale. Spear of Eons followed Autumn of Our Day’s example and attempted to exact some revenge for the destruction of Hymn to Rebirth by targeting the Teublitz and the Novamarine veterans. Spear of Eons got his wish, and the chapter master was vaporised by a pin-point accurate pulsar beam! The Terminators – and the remaining Marines across the battlefield– let loose a moan of dismay at Teublitz’s passing. Assuming temporary command, Librarian Herzog’s Devastators on the west answered this insult by once more targeting Hawk. All formations on both sides succeeded in recovering and rallying, with the exception of the Wraithguard. The battle hung in the balance, but night was drawing in and reluctantly the two armies were forced to disengage. The Novamarines had succeeded in breaking the spirit of the Eldar when they destroyed Hymn, but all other strategic objectives were hotly contested. It seemed that this battle would have to be considered a strategic stalemate by both sides, although perhaps a moral victory for the Novamarines… +++ The Novamarine survivors The Honoured Dead +++ Eldar Conclusion [Bob Hunk] This was hard fought game that was a lot of fun to play. I’m only sorry that we ran out of time and didn’t get to establish a proper conclusion. I think it could have gone either way although the advantage did rest with the Novamarines. I’d definitely learnt a lot of lessons from our last game though, and not dithering for the first turn certainly paid off. J Novamarine Conclusion [Apologist] Phew! What a great game. There were plenty of tense moments and exciting points of drama for both sides, providing a real tactical dance. I think this game showed that the Eldar Titan Clan list can work against an ‘all-comers’ list. The Waning Moon came out of the starting blocks snarling this time, and I think I had some good luck at critical points – not least passing two invulnerable saves with Captain Mercian to drive off Autumn of Our Days! My heart sank when the Tactical marines were engaged by one of the most fearsome close-combat Engines in the game, but Astartes grit really paid off. The blue-and-white line was definitely stretched thin at points, but the mobility of marines and the all-round flexibility of Tactical formations carried me through. Had the game continued, I wonder whether the Eldar’s toughness would have seen them victorious, as my formations were looking frayed, while I’d really only been able to cause scattered damage. Certainly there was a completely undamaged Phantom on Bob Hunk’s blitz… |

Great Report as always. Still I wonder if Bob could have got some more Activations in there, but it was a fluffy list. Tight battle, wish you had more time. The SG Terrain looked nice btw and the new Cathedral too! |

Nice report. Way to push the ETC list forward! I'm glad you've taken the time to work with the list and hope I'll have the chance to help out in the future. |
