Got in one more Necron playtest during the weekend... then it's All Tyranids All The Time!  Well, for the rest of the month.

Got my Eldar opponent to play again, saying that this Necron army had far fewer activations than the last one... I *didn't* mention this one had *more* Monoliths!

Not gonna be able to post it all tonight, but I'll put up the armies.

Out of interest did you ever get to try the plyon list where they were deployed at the start of the game in the necron deployment zone? Or does that await someone still?

I played a game (check the batreps) where I deployed 2 Pylons right off the bat.  They were useful, but not overwhelmingly so.

Haven't played that one yet, going to be focusing on Tyranids for a while, but I'll try to get to it eventually.

Battlefield:

4x6; Biel-Tan chose corner deployment

Deployment:

Biel-Tan kept the Aspect Warrior Warhost and Guardian Warhost 2 in the Webway.

Necrons kept everything in reserve.

Biel-Tan garrisoned Rangers on overwatch.

Remaining deployment as shown:

Turn 1

Monolith 1 shows up safely.

The Avatar then appears on the road near Guardian Warhost 1.

And then six more Monolith groups and the Pylon show up!  Only Monolith Groups 2 and 4 suffer any harm, each receiving a single Blast marker.

Strategy Roll: Necrons!

Monolith Group 1 hovers slightly closer to Guardian Warhost 1 and then engages Windriders 3!  The Eldar are pinned between the Monoliths on either side and only have three units in range to make attacks… and do no damage!  One Jetbike and one Vyper are flayed apart, and then the same happens again as the Necrons win.

Phalanx 1 then steps out of the first Portal of Monolith Maniple 2 and engages Guardian Warhost 1… with the support of *EIGHT* Monoliths.  The Guardians take down 1 Immortal and 2 Warriors, despite the assistance of the Avatar, and all are wiped out except a single stand of Wraithguard which holds its ground.  The Warrrior Phalanx disappears as suddenly as it arrived by stepping into the second Portal on Monolith 2. (Being able to cycle Phalanxes onto and then off the board at leisure was incredible!  Can really save damage Phalanxes from being destroyed. )

Falcon 2 sit tight and sustain fire on Monolith Group 6 that’s hiding in the nearby ruins.  The ruined building offers little protection as both Monoliths are destroyed.

Falcon 1 tries to do something similar, advancing and popping up to fire on Monolith Maniple 7… but they only manage to take out one of them and the survivor holds its ground. (Losing the only Farseer on the board in the first two enemy activations really hampered the Eldar player.)

Monolith Group 5 doubles down the road, getting a little extra mileage and fires on Falcon Troupe 2, placing a single Blast marker.

Phalanx 2 then arrives from the furthest Portal of Monolith 5 and engages Falcon Troupe 2, despite the support of the nearby Scorpion.  A single Necron Warrior goes down as the Falcons are wiped out.  The victorious Necrons then vanish via the second Portal of Monolith Group 5.

The rattled Scorpion attempts to sustain fire, but fails, and fires normally at Monolith 7, eliminating it.

Monolith Group 4 then engages the Avatar!  The Eldar War God flails about uselessly and His death wail as he goes down in arcs of green lightning terrorizes one of the Jetbike units of Windriders 3 to death!  (A *narrow* line of sight to the critically hit Avatar took out a broken biker/ *laugh*)

Windriders 1 doubles across the battlefield to get the Pylon in their sites, and they place a single Blast marker.

The Nightwings then dive down in an attempt to finish the job.  One of the squadron is blown out of the air and the other two do 1DC damage and break the Pylon.

Monolith Group 3 then doubles after the last survivors of Windriders 3 and takes them out.

Windriders 2 double towards Monolith 1 and put a Blast marker on them.

Phalanx 3 then steps out of the first of Monolith 1, engages and destroys the sole remaining Wraithguard of Guardian Warhost 1

And is picked up by the other Portal of Monolith 1 and then steps *out* of Monolith Group 3 beside Eldar Objective 1… (Wow!  It’s amazing to have so many available Portals!)

End of Turn:

All formations rally.

Turn 2

Monolith 8 decides to show itself, harassing the Jetbikes near the Necron Blitz.

And The Nightbringer, played today by special guest Bane Lord Tartarus, shows up deep in enemy territory, ready to lay down some serious beats.

Strategy Roll: Necrons… again!

A sickening grin plays over The Nightbringer’s features as He engages the intermingled Falcon Troup 1 and the Scorpion Engine of Vaul.  The Scorpion takes 2DC damage and a crit, exploding.  The Nightbringer takes 1DC of damage… and a crit… *EXPLODING*  Nothing is left in that corner of the battlefield.  (I’ll be making a comment about this after the battle report.)

Catching the nearby Windriders in a crossfire, the Pylon sustains fire and blanks a Jetbike from existence, also placing 3 Blast markers on the troupe.

In a desperate gamble, Windriders 1 engage the damage Pylon… and manage to take it out with no casualties!  The quickly jet away from the approaching Monoliths.

Windriders 2 use hit-and-run tactics to fire on Monolith Maniple 5, taking out 1 Monolith and then advance away.

Monolith Maniple 8 tries to pursue Windriders 1 on a double, but can’t get them into range.

Phalanx 4 steps out of Monolith 5 to engage Windriders 2… overwatch fire from the Rangers takes out the Necron Lord and retinue before the battle begins.  The Necrons take out two Jetbikes and lose two Warriors, but the loss of the Lord was too much, and the Phalanx is wiped out in resolution.

The Warp Spider Warhost then opens the Wraithgate to engage the lone Monolith of Maniple 5 and tears the pyramid of power apart with ease.

Monolith 1 doubles towards the nearly arrived Warp Spiders and puts a Blast marker on them.

The Nightwings feel like staying at base to hold a wake for their lost comrade, but the Autarch yells, “NOT THIS TIME!â€Â

Turn 3

Surprisingly, no teleports occur!

Strategy Roll: With the loss of the Necron Supreme Commander allows Biel-Tan to *finally* go first!

The Warp Spiders engage Monolith Group 2, but are only able to take out a single Monolith, so the Necron threat remains.

Trying to secure the Necron Blitz, Windriders 1 engages Phalanx 2 and takes out a single Necron Warrior… before the Eldar are wiped out.

Monolith Group 4 goes onto overwatch, hovering ominously at Eldar Objective 2.

The Nightwings fly in to ground attack Monolith 3, but only place a Blast marker.

Monolith Group 8 doubles to secure the Necron Blitz and offer its Portals to Phalanx 2.

Phalanx 2 tries to take them up on their offer… but fails!  Holding to clear Blast markers and restore two Warrior units to working status.

Windriders 2 need the stern words of the Autarch to engage Monolith Group 2… they take out the Monolith, but lose two members themselves, breaking under the strain.

Fully restored, Phalanx 1 doubles, entering a Portal of Monolith Group 3 and exiting from Monolith 4, using the road to move further and fire on the Warp Spiders, taking one of the annoying Aspect Warriors out.

The Ranger Troupe finally leaves the Hero’s Shrine to snag the Necron Objective in the Cathedral.  The snap a shot off at Phalanx 1, just to be annoying, but do no damage.

Monolith 3 goes onto overwatch hovering ominously over Eldar Objective 1.

The Wraithgate opens, and the mighty Guardian Warhost 2 marches out to grab Necron Objective 1 without firing a single shot…

End of Turn:

Windriders 2 fails to rally.

Monolith Group 1 and Warrior Phalanx 1 both fail to rally.

Score:

Biel-Tan 2 (BTS, T-n-H) vs Necrons 1 (T-n-H)

Why were the objectives in the Eldar half so spread out? The strength of the monolith list relies on having a small triangle of objectives each 30cm apart off the blitz to teleport just about everything into.

Monolith Maniple 8 tries to pursue Windriders 1 on a double, but can’t get them into range.

Do you play without premeasuring?

The two "forward" Eldar side objectives are just outside of 30cm of each other, so a single Monolith Group can hold them both... I placed them so far from the Eldar Blitz to force the Eldar to have to come to them to defend them.

Placing them near the Eldar Blitz would mean the Eldar player could just concentrate their forces and support at their leisure with Hit and Run.

No, we play with "measuring", it's just that the 30cm move of a double couldn't get them in range is all and I didn't feel like marching.

In my experience Eldar basically suck at bunkering up, and excel at movement. You were playing to their strengths.

Necrons can't march...

Really?

I've found Eldar excel at both, being able to reposition for support after assaults, set up crossfires, etc.  Lots of FF4+ and skimmers that make assaulting them a tough prospect.
