Myself and another guard player, vs a couple of tyranid players. One of them playing his first game with tyranids in EA, the other has used many previous versions of the bugs (Note their armies look similar in terms of paintjob because both players bought stuff from the same second hand source!)

The list they used was 8.4m with exp bio-titans (most other changes in a previous version were scrapped for this battle).

Sadly I haven't got time to do a full report, so will just do an overview plus impressions.

Turn 1

The bugs advance everywhere. The guardsmen in the centre building (3+ cover save) panic and waste their overwatch shots on the heirophant (they all bounce and then it kills 4 with it's bioplasma breath). The genestealers assault with support fire from nearby gaunts and the titan, and take the building.  


Turn 2

Lictors arrive all over the place on the left. Guard win SR.
Masses of bugs are swarming towards the left flank and the Tank company and basilisks there decide to 'bug out'  with tyranids in hot pursuit. :alien:  The doubling artillery and tanks smash two lictor formations as they fire on the move... I fire two artillery batteries in support at the chasing tyranids but to little effect.

"Run!!"


On the central hill, the advancing bio-titans spew bio-plasma on my mates Reg HQ causing a couple of casualties, and then it is assaulted by genestealers, lictors, and the winged tyrant and gargoyles. Only the Supreme commander survives directed to safety by the Commissar... the pic below shows end of turn 2. The broken and retreating imperial formations can be seen lower left, while my tanks advance unopposed on the right.


The shadowswords fail to follow orders, and vaporise the remnants of a genestealer formation rather than driving and shooting a bio-titan....

Turn 3

Bugs win strategy roll, and the bio-titans clatter over the hill unloading bioplasma and biocannon fire at the Shadowswords, destroying one of them. The remaining two shadowswords reverse at the double...


...one managing to blast off a shot which knocks the Hydraphant down 3DC.  With a hail of missiles my reg HQ gets lucky and manages to kill it!


My infantry company in the next set of ruins manages to beat off two swarms but the third overwhelms and destroys them. Nontheless with two depleted swarms knocked back in confusion, the hydraphant dead, and the dominatrix brood taking a hammering from Leman Russ, things seem to have turned around for the Imperials.

Turn 4

Bugs win strategy roll. Dominatrix and Winged tyrant both assault my first Leman Russ Company! The Leman Russ loose 5 tanks, but furious at the loss of their vanquisher and commmissar last turn (got unlucky with hits), they beat off the tyranids!-  Winning the combat before breaking and retreating themselves due to casualties.

Unfortunately the hierophant manages to rip up the shadowswords.

We shoot back ineffectually, my other Leman Russ company chasing the retreating Dominatrix and dropping it to a single DC. (Die damn it!)

The bugs then make their big move. Two big tyranid swarms advance and fire on my regimental HQ that is defending our baseline objective. Then Lictors assault, with 2 of them living long enough to have masses of support fire (two big swarms plus the heirophant). The tyranids win by 1 and I'm forced to retreat, my Colonel meeting up with the other Colonel to relay the bad news. I bring down artillery on the gaunts in the open killing bucketloads of them, but too late.

Yet another hierophant arrives on the scene... oh oh.

End of turn 4, 1 victory condition to tyranids... we roll the dice and the game extends for a final turn.

Turn 5

The Tyranids win the Strategy roll.

The Dominatrix having a regenerated a wound, and sick of being chased, turns around and together with the winged tyrant, attacks the Leman Russ...


However, staunch as ever the Russ beat off the attack without taking a single casualty! Praise the Emperor!

But back at our blitz objective, the hierophants spit bioplasma everywhere  my supreme commander dies and my manticores break.

My Leman Russ blast the Dominatrix but still can't finish it off!! Aaagh.

At our blitz objective the remnants of two infantry companies try to hold. However, my now leaderless Regimental HQ company panics and breaks when it's ordered to engage the hierophant (understandably perhaps)... and the bugs swarm forward taking the position and the game.

Bugs have all their objectives and two of ours, winning the game 3-0 with 'blitz', 'take and hold', and 'defend the flag' (or rather 'defend the brood nests'...).

Conclusions

Great game again. Thought we had pulled it back turn 3... but it was not to be.

I let my ally down a little in the first couple of turns by not being aggressive enough with my tanks (so everyone watching said... :p). Also even just one battery of bombards would have been amazingly useful in this battle to smash up the bugs taking cover in the buildings and ruins. Usually my ally brings bombards but didn't this game for some reason.

The variant bio-plasma on the titans is certainly nasty against guard, really helped the bugs soften up the guard positions, but I quite liked the feel of it. Having a single disobedient shadowsword company as our main weapon against 4 Bio-Titans was tough. One comment from me was that all the saves on the lictors started to get a bit annoying (from a gameplay perspective). Haven't got  feedback from the others yet.

Epic- A version of the game with even smaller models that is often dominated by titans which are vehicles the size of a large building and have the ability to pwn...everything. There is also infantry, whose only function in Epic is to provide valuable traction to Titans walking across snowy paths.
