Hi everyone! Been a while. I haven't been able to play as much as I'd like lately

I just got back from a my second 2v2 game using my new Black Legion army. I know it's very early yet in my chaos career, but I am feeling a bit frustrated with the BL at the moment.

In both games, I ran right around 1500 points of BL while my partner ran 1500 of Orks. The first game was against Squats and Eldar and the second game against all Eldar.

The basic issue I am having is that 1500 points pretty much gets me three activations. The units are huge and unwieldy. Today I had a retinue + bersekers with Rhinos, a retinue + noise marines with Rhinos, and an Armored Company of 6 Land Raiders. The Armored Company got broken and destroyed in short order. The retinues absorbed a lot of fire, but then got absolutely trounced in assault by the Eldar.

At the moment, that's about all I have painted (I will only play painted), but I am trying to figure out what I need next. It just feels like every unit available to BL is huge and expensive. I also feel like the cult troops attached to the retinues are a waste of points.

Any suggestions?

At 1500pts you can't afford to beef up the formations like that

Are you using aircraft+daemons if not I'd take something like
Retinue+rhinos 315
Retinue+rhinos 315
2 Preds+2 LR 250
Chosen+rhinos 145
terminators 275
4 preds 200
Or at least aiming for 5-6 activations, bigger games allow more upgrades (pacts,obliterators etc)

Thanks. At the moment, I am constrained by what I have painted. But your suggestions give me a good idea of which direction to go in with my painting projects.

The only concern I have is some of those small unit sizes. Won't units of four tanks get broken pretty quickly? Even in my game today, my 6 LR formation got broken by those damned Eldar bombers in a single turn.

I do have a bunch of demons painted up that I can use, and also just got some Hell Talons and Hell Blades that shouldn't take me long to paint.

When playing Black Legion Is have found the bog standard retinue in rhinos to be one of the most effective formations - It is fast, well armoured, able to FF and CC equally well and relatively cheap - plus it is core.

In 3k I normally look for 3 / 4 retinues.

I hate to face BL predator formations. While not overly dangerous, it still takes dedicated AT to break them. They are cheap, fast and highly useful. At <3K, they're almost indispensible.

I love retinues as well. Good advice. Is it me, or do cult troop upgrades for the retinues seem to be a waste of points?

What's the best size for the Predator formations? Just four seems like it would break very easily. Is six the right number? Or is there a way to make four work?

I actually had a conversation with a member of my gaming group on this over the weekend. His suggestoin to me was to run an armored company of 2 land raiders & 3 predators. Gets you 5 solid AT shots and a decent weight of AP fire with minimal movement reduction. The land raiders out front can soak a remarkable amount of incoming fire with the 4+ reinforced, and the second-line predators raise your break limit a little and contribute a comparable amount of fire to 4x land raiders, for the same/comparable 300pts.

TL:DR - 2 land raiders, 3 predators has a higher break point than 4x land raiders, more durable than 6x predators, about the same weight of fire.

7 AT shots at 4+, not 5. each land raider has 2 x twin las cannon.

250pts for 2 x Land raider (sitting in front) and 2 Predators (hiding behind) is a fairly good and cheap formation.
