Ok.  I've been trying to build some 2000 point armies for Adepticon of various forces. We have to go 2000 points because the con head honcho was being obstinate back when the scheduling was being made to have the Epic be a half day event because it's been failing to draw numbers for the last couple years so we have a 5 hour event this year...  Of course now in our area we're now getting 10-12 playing epic every other Thursday and some of the guys there are showing up at the bunker even more often to play so there is probably a good chance we'll actually get more numbers.  

That being said,  I'd love to run more daemon engines in my Lost and the Damned army because IMO that's where the flavor of the army is.  However with the "you must take an infantry coven for every support formation" army construction restriction,  each formation effectively costs 200 points more than what it says in the list so if you realistically want to put any upgrades on your covens,  you're maybe going to get 2, 3 daemon engine formations tops in a 2000 point army.  

How do you think something like this would end up working.  

Concept:  Lesser and Greater Daemon Engines.

Covens are able to garner enough support from the chaos gods to have daemon engines in their force.  The more powerful the Daemon Engine,  the more power from a coven it needs to support it.  

In game terms.  Daemon Engines are categorized into Lesser and Greater Daemon Engines.

Greater Daemon Engines would be the big War Engine pieces,  the Khorne Lord of Battle,  the Nurgle Plague Tower,  the Slannesh Scout Titans,  and the big Tzeentch Flier.  

Lesser Daemon Engines would be the Khorne Assault Engines,  the nurgle Contagions,  Slannesh Knights,  Tzeentch Silver Towers and small Tzeentch Fliers and the 2 Undivided formations.

Greater Daemon Engine formations would work like they currently do.  Buy one coven,  get one Greater Daemon Engine formation.

For the Lessers you could get 2 formations for every Coven,  kind of like how you can get 2 side formations for every steel legion company.

Opinions on this?  Am I completely off base with this idea?

IMO the 1:1 ratio is integral to the LatD list, it is supposed to be horde of cultists with daemon engine and corrupted imperial support not masses of daemon engines with some cultists.

Ok.  That is an answer I can understand.  I guess I just got too many of the old daemon engines for my own good then.  I think I have to field at least 22 covens to field em all and I STILL need some more (I want some Contagions to go with the one Plague Tower I have )
