Post subject:  Concepts for Traitor/Cultist (Non-CSM) lists

This topic has been approached several times previously.  However, given that there is a new sheriff in town and it came up again in the L&D/Helltalon poll thread, I thought I would start a thread where we could discuss general directions for potential non-marine chaos lists.

===

To start off, recapping my post from the Helltalon thread, I see roughly 3 divisions of non-CSM chaos lists:

Early or moderate corruption/rebellion - lots of IG/PDF gear, reasonably competent human-style command and low level mutations (small in number and/or kept to a very specific style)

Serious corruption/rebellion - substantial IG/PDF gear but mixed with non-standard, loss of the prior human-based command and control, higher levels of mutations

Eye of Terror armies - unique chaos tech, units and daemonically-driven command

I think any of these could be done faction-specific, e.g. an early list for Tzeentch that has a disproportionate number of rogue psykers, but most faction lists would benefit from being farther along the path of corruption in order to help develop a strong enough stylistic feel.

===

Of the fan lists out there, I think they fit sort of like this:

Traitor Guard (Hena) - Obviously an early rebellion.  Low on daemons and chaos tech.

Crimson Bondsmen (Evil & Chaos) - An early rebellion.  Largely IG/PDF.  Alternate force organization but with only a small number of chaos/daemon units.

Alpha Legion Rebellion (nealhunt) - An early rebellion.  Few mutations, but with support from Alpha Legion for some stronger core units and orbital support.

Vraksian Renegades (Evil & Chaos) - On the line.  The war begins early in the corruption process but E&C's list is well into the war, after the effort has garnered external chaos support.  The IG-based forces are light on corruption but they have some high-chaos-tech in support.

Servants of Slaughter (Zombocom) - Substantial corruption.  The list represents the most seriously mutated forces in the Vraksian rebellion.

The Lost and the Damned - The official list and, imho, the standard by which to judge seriously corrupted, non-CSM army lists.

Chaos Squat (frogbear) - Based on the conceptual discussions and the themes behind the old chaos squats, I would consider this to be an Eye of Terror army.  I would anticipate a moderate organization and lots of unique chaos (squat) technology.

Daemon World (Chroma) - Obviously straight out of the EoT.

Dark Adeptus/Chaos Titan Legion/House Devine - EoT, with lots of exoticism

Chaos Squat ........... I would consider this to be an Eye of Terror army.

:agree:   Correct. Whole planets were sucked into the EOT.

Don't forget the Crimson Bondsmen list that E&C drew up, it's going to be included in the Epic Maelstrom project (focussing upon an invasion lead by the Red Corsairs), and not least of all because it's the list I'm currently building my latest Epic army using!  :grinning:

I like your ideas, Neal.

Steve:  Do you have any planned direction at the moment for variant L&D?

I intend to continue work on the Vraks list.

And if Black Legion wants me to, I'll continue to work on the Crimson Bondsmen.

I too would like that, seeing as I'm using that list to build an army at the moment!  :p
