Hey folks

Anyone tried to make a workable Vraksian Traitor list?  I'm trying to put one together which will be largely based on my current Valhallan list + some well-chosen proxies but I'm not really sure where to go from here.

CORE

malcador platoon - 650

regimental hq - 525
+hellhounds - 150

infantry platoon - 275



SUPPORT

minotaur platoon - 400
+ogryns - 125

valdor squadron - 200



ALLIES

alpha legion retinue - 325

hellblade squadron - 200


So I've got four pretty solid formations in the shape of the mounted infantry, foot-slogging infantry, malcadors and the alpha legion, with a sneaky tank unit and a pretty nasty artillery unit as well.  

The hellblades can harry small formations and add the odd blast marker, whilst the hellhounds will add some anti-infantry support to the mech. inf. and the ogryns will hopefully defend against engagements on the artillery (is this a viable tactic?).

Any recommendation on what to add?  A few Sentinel screens maybe?

7 activations, pretty low (I tend to aim for ~9 activations at 3000pts)... however many of them are rock solid (Minotaur artillery at least on paper looks brutal).

Note that only Core formations can take upgrades, so the Minotaur platoon can't take Ogryns.

You've taken the Chimeras upgrade for the Reg HQ, plus also the Hellhounds upgrade? You may want to consider stripping it down to just the basic formation (+Ogryns?) to free up points as you're low on activations. Okay it won't be as rock-hard a formation but you'll still have the Alpha Legion formation as a mobile hard hitting task force. The free points could let you get a Sentinel squadron or two to capture objectives / screen your artillery.

Some ground based AA would be good with those freed-up points too.

Cheers for the tips C&E.

So you don't think that the HQ will be too slow without Chimeras?  Obviously IG aren't supposed to be a re-deployable strike force but you reckon the points'd be spent better elsewhere?

One of the advantages of the list is the possibility to take a cheap, infantry Supreme Commander, allowing points to be freed up for elsewhere.

True, true.  And after our game yesterday zombocom I have discovered a huge amount of respect for overwatched garrisons, which obviously that formation could be used for.

I still maintain dice did the talking in that game!

Hey guys, here's my second attempt.

CORE

regimental hq - 375
+ogryns - 125
+flak - 50

infantry platoon - 275

armoured fist platoon - 300

TOTAL - 3175

ACTIVATIONS - 10

Obviously this is 175pts over, so I'm trying to work out what to drop.

The obvious choice would be the ogryns and one of the flak.  Do I need a few flak still despite my hellblades?  

I quite like the armoured fist platoon being in there, but seeing as it would mean painting more infantry I could probably be convinvced to drop them quite easily. Another manoverable fire power unit to go with the Alpha Legion would be handy though I reckon.  Maybe swap them for the Discliples of Xaphan which seem equally manouverable and almost as shooty? I could use my storm troopers for those for now, until I can find maybe some DRM as proxies.

Any thoughts folks?

Sorry, not sure what the rules are here on bumping, but anyone got any more opinions on this?

Imperial Guard players could probably give some valuable advice as well as those familiar with the Vraks list.

I was thinking you could drop one Hydra, one Sentinel Squadron, and the Salamander.

That'd leave you with a pretty aggressive army list...

Mmm, that sounds like good choices.  I think I might swap the armoured fist for disciples of xaphan, those 8 macro shots'll be very useful, seeing as there are no titans and few macro weapons in the list.

Was that a deliberate choice, for them to be not all that great against titans and super heavies?  Or am I missing something?  Ogryns of course would be good if they can get into contact!

Also want to have an easy swap out for another Alpha Legion formation, so I need to have 325ish ready to swap.

In order to compensate for their lack of Titans and Super-Heavies in general, the Vraksians have access to some neat toys like the Valdor and Destroyer Tank Hunter Squadrons and a wider variety of tanks in the form of the Malcadors, plus the excellent Alpha Legion formation.

So basically in order to gain some extra choices/new units, they lost some of their Titan-Hunting power.

The restriction on super-heavies/titans is supported by the background ; Chaos Titans only appeared on Vraks late in the war.

I may introduce Chaos Warhounds and Chaos Reavers but possibly not Chaos Warlords (Chaos Warlords did not appear on Vraks to my knowlege).

Then I'll probably be replacing the Disciples of Xaphan and the hydra for another Alpha Legion retinue in the future.

E&C: guessing you haven't playtested it much yet, due to lack of proxies.  I'm guessing once they're about you'll be trying them out? Obviously I can give you comments as well, I'll be using a fair chunk of my Valhallans at first for this force so it shouldn't take too long to get off the ground.

You should note that historically the Vraksian Renegate Militia didn't had acsess to any aircrafts.
