In short, does anybody use these?!

Not unless they are in Dreadclaws

I never used them in my Space Marine army either unless they were being transported.

Too fragile to survive walking across a battlefield for too long.

On a tangent to this, does anyone have any proxy ideas for chaos dreads? I'm trying to avoid just painting imperial stuff black for my black legion army!

I know there was an old "Chaos dreadnought" that looked like the space crusade dreadnought. Its not exactly a close combat monster though.

There is another, the old plastic marine dreadnought, that I thought might be a better proxy as it looks rather imposing (its tall for a dread)

Id recommend buying some plastic skeletons and remove the face from one of the skulls. File the sarcophagus from a SM dread and add the skull face and you have a passable chaos dread. You can ?add a few spikes ?(From the back of Chaos terminators - they look silly anyway) or extra bitz from the skeletons if you feel they need further chaosifying.

You could also use the head from a flesh hound instead of the skull for a Khorne themed dread.

An alternative idea is to look at Chaos Knights for Warmaster. I don't know these models very well but I suspect that there might be some bitz that could be used to replace the sarcophagus.

Further "Pimp my Dread" suggestions would be adding a Berzerker chainsaw to the powerfist for a meaner looking CC weapon, Add a few simple bubols from Green Stuff: Just one or two small blobs of GS will do.
Paint will do the rest for a very decent looking proxy (Well conversion really)

That made me laugh!

I'll give the skull/sarcophagus suggestion a go when I get round to chaos dreds, it would certainly make them a lot less bland than black marine dreadnoughts.

One of my staple CSM tactics is to use a retinue or two for area denial duties.  They are big enough and hard enough to hold down a fair-sized area.  Garrison them in place and OW, Sustain, or slowly advance through cover.  It works best with a pair that can "leap frog" with each other - one sits on OW or Sustains fire to clear the path while the other Advances.  Next turn, switch.

Normally, I favor infantry so I use Havocs or Noise Marines if I'm playing Slaanesh.  While I haven't used Dreads, I have used Defilers to good effect in that same tactic.  I rather suspect that Dreads or a mix of Deads/Defilers would do the job admirably.  They are all walkers so they can move through cover and as AVs, the infantry can take cover on them if there is no other to be had.

Yes, I have 3 Dets of the old SM2 C/Dreads ... they like all Dreads are a bit slow.  So I like to use them like WWII AT/SPT wpns.  I try to put them in a support by fire position. Or even to cover a flank ...

Afraid I cannot claim that idea as my own. I think it might be Tuffskull or Markconz that originally came up with that. I haven't done it myself but it seemed like a relatively simple, yet effective conversion.

I have four Forge World Grey Knight Dreadnoughts painted as Thousand Sons Chaos Dreadnoughts. The glaive is a great shape to go with Thousand Sons (I also use Forge World's Grey Knight Terminators as Thousand Sons Chosen) and they are already sculpted as the Mark IV type with identifiable heads. I just replaced the psycannon with a couple of bits of tubing to give them twin autocannon.

It just occured to me that you could put tails on the dreads in a fashion reminiscent of chaos titan tails.  A bit of guitar string and a few weapon bitz would work nicely.
