Alright, I have a few decisions to make in regards to what to take against the Imperial Guard.

I am at two minds whether to include the Banelord or not as I would expect the Imp Guard to have a Cruiser and enough Super Heavies to really darken my day in that respect. However it's removal has not really hiked up the activations in the army.

My main goal is to test out Defilers, and Slaughterfiends so they are the things that I wish to remain. All other items are negotiable for change

I would really like some feedback on the below lists:

Idea One
This leaves me with 200 points spare which I can use to buy dreadnoughts for the Dreadclaw assault forces, a character upgrade for the Bloodpack, or fill out some other units. Alternatively it has 12 activations currently, so the extra 200 could also be spent on a small unit (Bike Retinue of 4 bikes) to bring it up to 13 activations:
Hellblades 200
Hellblades 200

Devastation Cruiser 150
Berserkers + Skull Lord + Dreadclaws 375

I also made a ground units only force, however at 4000 points, I believe the game significantly changes and Blitzkrieg is the only order against Imp Guard.

Good to know. Seeing that the characters in this are fearless anyway, it is actually a detriment placing them on a defiler as you lose another potential stand with fearless, and potentially become more of a target as you cannot claim cover (only hull down if possible).

Consider that 'artifact' safely locked away in Warehouse 13.   :agree:

I believe it is *only* the "Lord" characters, that is, the initial character included with the formation, that is prevented from being put in anything but a "core" unit.

Well the SC is always a seperate stand and has his own stats.

As for a character, the CC is judged on the unit, and the army does not have a better CC than the Berserkers, Terminators or Chosen for that purpose.

When considering placing the character on a Slaughterfiend (available via the Bloodpack upgrade only), I am effectively taking my chances of having 3 fearless units in a formation rather than 4. As it is 'putting all ones eggs into ones basket' I think that it is not unbalanced. I have taken it in 2 games now, 1 where he died in Turn 2 (I believe), and in the one yesterday where he survived in a broken unit with 2 troop stands.

The only question that comes up really is that does he get both the invulnerable save of the Slaughterfiend and the character. I have been playing it as he only gets one invulnerable save. In that case, I am also forgoing another save potential on a stand.

I think all of that makes it quite a reasonable and balanced decision as to whether to upgrade the Slaughterfiend or not. I will try it out again in tonights game and see if I can do anything with this blasted unit. If this fails, I may consider 2 formations of them.

Invulnerable Save only applies once.

Chapter 2.0
"A unit may only have one of each special ability. If an ability is duplicated (for example, a character with a special ability is added to a unit that already has the special ability) treat the unit as if the ability only occurs once."

Incorrect, sorry, that limitation only applies to the "free" Lord character included in the formation:

BL2.1.1.1 Chaos Lord Upgrade
The Chaos Lord upgrade can only be applied to one
of the Core units of a Black Legion Formation. For
example, the Chaos Lord (or Chaos Warlord)
upgrade for a Black Legion Retinue could only be
added to the Chaos Space Marine units in that
formation. It could not be added to any units, such
as Obliterators or Cult Marines purchased as an
Upgrade.


You can put the Chaos Champion, etc, where ever you like.

Same in the Red Corsairs. As the Lord character is part of the unupgraded formation he can't be assigned to upgrade units.

Hmmm

I may have to include the ruling for the Blood Lord (SC) upgrade as well just to keep in line with all the rest. I will allow all other characters to upgrade as part of the playtest as I cannot see it being 'broken' in theory.
