Hmm so a skimmer or jump pack unit? How far does it get to move? Skimmer/ jump pack, speed: infinite?   I think any speed you put on it won't represent it's ability to take off and land again as described - "ferrying across the planet..." suggests great distances. It would have to be Bomber surely? Slower turning angles as it's described as more manouevrable than a drop pod etc. It would need to take a ground attack action perhaps to land it's troops.
This said I'm still deep in the drop pod minus deathwind camp

I'm still for drop pods minus deathwind and minus scatter - all these other ideas seem clunky and would require a great deal of in list explanation in an area (spacecraft+planetfall) which already confuses people

I'm for keeping it simple, droppods with no deathwind and no scatter. The extra manouverability and redeployment at 40k scale can simply be represented by being more accurate in deployment at epic scale.

I don't see the need to have skimmers flying around the place, and making them planes is far too problematic.

Which actually requires a new (although small) Special Rule, whilst having them as Jump Pack units fits within the current rule system AFAIK.

which requires to exception to say that it can't be deployed normally

Why couldn't they be deployed "normally" as forces that had already arrived on the surface?

Indeed I don't see why they couldn't be deployed normally either.

You'd be at a pretty harsh disadvantage in doing so, paying points for a Planetfall ability that you're not using. It'd be like deploying terminators on the board at the beginning of the game, possible, but not the wisest use of them.

So their bad side is cost over Rhinos?

And no attacks at all.

...they are "just better Rhinos" in the end.

Yes they'd be better Rhinos, that cost four or five times as much.

Hena's right about the Crossfire, not that it's a particularly important drawback.

The main drawback would be Dreadclaws costing four or five times the price of a Rhino, as is appropriate for a transport that can Planetfall.

Didn't I read somewhere on here or a list that they could not be used for crossfire purposes?

I think that is a huge disadvantage for a 'skimmer' (if it becomes that). Such a vehicle could easily place itself in a position to give such support, so yes, I think it is a little more than a minor setback.

In the menatime, that sole Rhino that has survived can be used for such purposes.

That's a rule for the current "drop pod" version of Dreadclaws, since they don't actually make a prolonged presence on the battlefield.
