Thinking about the assault company would it be better to remove this entirely and replace it with the following.

Single and pair options for doom wheels in the titan third.
Decimators as singles plus defiler upgrades as upgrade choices in the core section.

Decimators in the titan third would always loose out to ferals or wheels, and as singles they are far from game breaking, in my experience anyway.

I agree with Mephiston.

Maybe Decimators can go in the elite support slot? I do think it's a little much to place them in the 1/3 allowance, as other armies get access to similar super heavies outside of the limit (Guard and Eldar, even Marines arguably with Thunderhawks and Landing Craft)

Yes, I agree with them in the elite section on reflection.

IIRC it was spammed single Decimators that broke the Assault Company and caused the 0-2 limitation in the first place (they were unbalanced in the same way that an army of nothing but Warhound Titans is unbalanced).

=====

Having Decimators as an Elite choice would mean there would be 4 formation types in the Elite section, and only 3 in the General section...

...possibly transfer Defilers (does Blacklegion have a good name for a Defiler formation for us?) to the General Support section?

I understand the rationale for having them as Elite on a fluff basis, but can't see obvious balance problems with them being spammed, unlike the other Elite choices...

Sounds like a good compromise to me.

Why is this a problem? Of the armies that don't free range it (Marines and Orks), Guard have 6 Core, 9 Support. Eldar 2 Core, 6 Support. Necrons just got reduced to 1 Core, and Tau have an arguable 3 Core (though really 2, with one having Tranport option.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the Defiler issue, I'm curious why you think it's a problem?

I think the Elite support section *may* be too cramped as-is, enough that it may compromise army selection choice.

I chose Defilers as the least powerful (IMO) of the Elite formations to suggest moving to General Support.

Also then you could make an army with like 3 Retinues and 6 Defiler formations (24 Defilers), with 375pts left over to spend on upgrades or aircraft, which would be hillarious.

I agree with E&C about moving the Defilers into the 'normal' support group in this case, if only for the purposes of variety.

I thought the term that was used in 40k was 'Coterie', although I don't like the sound of it...

There is a nice list of collective nouns here:

Defiler Assault Force seems okay (a bit generic perhaps), but Daemon Engine Summoning is just poor.
