Are they listed as "upgrades" (which I don't think they should be) or "characters" in the actual army list?

Its listed as a character upgrade

But, technically, it's not an "upgrade", it's part of the formation, no?

Does that mean that such formations may only choose two additional upgrades from their potential "three"?

I just don't believe the word "upgrade" is needed, the "character" ability/word already means it's added to a unit in the formation.

It is an upgrade to a unit though and it is included in the list of what comes with each formation.

I don't recall anyone ever mentioning that they thought it counted against their allowable upgrades for a formation

Hmmm... what I'm trying to say is that "character upgrade" is redundant, the "character" special ability already means "added to a unit".

e.g.:

Original:
Raptor Cult: One Chaos Space Marine Lord character upgrade and from four to eight Raptor units.

Proposed:
Raptor Cult: One Chaos Space Marine Lord character and from four to eight Raptor units.

They both mean the same thing, but the second uses one less word/avoids any "upgrade" confusion. ?It's just editing/clarification.

Doesn't mean it can't happen, why not nip it now instead of in a FAQ?

(Hmm... just realized Black Legion gets *four* upgrades per formation! ?Here I've always thought it was three! ?*laugh*)

They don't mean the same thing. One "upgrade" means that you add the Character to a unit and the other implies that the character is distinct from the units purchased.

That wording will indeed result in questions from people

The special ability "character", by definition in the E:A rulebook, includes the meaning "added to a unit".  The Chaos Space Marine Lords are "characters"; if included in a formation listing that means, specifically, that the character is included on one of the units and that it is part of that specific formation, what other interpretation is there?

I can see both sides - while Chroma is absolutely correct, I think people will get confused as to whether it is a seperate unit or not. As to whether "character upgrade" actually counts as an upgrade is easily answered in a FAQ. Chroma, I don't think it is a real problem as it isn't in the list of "Upgrades" so I think we're safe enough there.

"Chaos Lord" in the army list for each retinue needs to be corrected as "Chaos Space Marine Lord" though. I still think a new name for "Chaos Space Marine Lord" might be a good idea to reduce confusion.

Yeah I've always thought it need to be changed to avoid confusion.. Something like Grand Pumbah....in all seriously there are too many similar terms flying around. I don't care what it's called as long as it is easy to separate from other units.

Call it Chaos Exalted Champion
Chaos Exalted Champions are either Chaos Warlords, Chaos Lords or Chaos Sorcerer Lords.

The question of Character v Unit comes up all the time.  It is one of the most frequently asked questions.

There will be confusion either way.

Few things.

1. I'll have a look at this later when I am downstairs at my Mac.

2. I'll have a look at these as per Neal's post in that thread but AFAIK they are already correct

3. I agree but that is the way that the weapons have been specced across the entire game.

4. I'll look at that

5. Already fixed

6. Not sure what difference that would make.
