Post subject:  AI - is it any good?

I've been thinking about buying AI for a while now. But with not much money and a wife and four kids  :p  I don't get much to spend on hobby stuff> So the hundred quid or so I'd need to spend on the rules and some planes is a big deal to me.
Question is, is it worth having? Does anybody play this game at all, or did you get bored with it quickly?
Would I be better off using the money to go to an Epic tournament instead?

Advice, anyone?
Regards,
Reaver

Yes, get AI.

This question gets asked a lot over at Warseer and there are discussions about it.

For me, It has only increased my interest in Epic - my first Epic Eldar and Ork paint jobs and the ones I will be using I did on AI units for demo games.

In you case since you are on a budget - are there any players in our local club or someone else who is interested, but just wants another player.  I ask because this is what will determine what you can get for your ?100.  If you are going to have to get enough for both sides to play a game then you are only going to be able to get a few fighters (and the cheapest it would be Nightwings and Thunderbolts).

I have gotten nothing but interest from people when they saw the game.  I think it is a growing community (of course I may be bias).

No track down Gavin (Biggles) and play his WWI air game. The best 'war' game I reckon I've ever played. Hes in London incidentally. And the planes are cheap :)

AI is fun, but it's not a particularly incredible air combat game.

The reviews I have read state about the same: it's an OK air combat game but does not feel like a sci-fi air combat game. Instead it's WWII in space where all are armed with machineguns.

To be honest with you, that sounds perfect to me! The Battle of Britain with Thunderbolts and Fighta-Bommaz instead of Spitfires and Me109s is pretty much what I'm after...

Aye, one of the fun things about 40k is how anachronistic it is.

I really do not think a Sci-Fi air combat game would be all that fun or interesting.  "Ok so your sensors are radar and I brought radar jammers, your missiles wont work and I brought magnetic sensors and you brought magnetic jammers, my missiles dont work - guess we are switching to guns" (Suddenly the Sci-Fi air combat game feels a lot like WWII/Korea air combat game) or "Alright I have better missiles, opening fire at 200 km and all your aircraft our dead, want to play again?"

Youve obviously never played Interceptor or Silent Death- both are brilliant space fighter games that capture the spirit of SF in a cinematic way

Saying a Sci-Fi air combat game would not be fun or interesting is poor of me - AI is a SciFi air combat game that is fun (and easy to pick up)

What I should have said is that an air combat game based on modern air combat would not be that fun (IMO).  Modern air combat has a lot to do with what kind of jamming/stealth tech you have (defense) and how good your radars and missiles are (offense).  Fx beyond visual range is easily done with modern technology.  So my aircraft is over here at 50 km locks onto your aircraft and unloads its missiles and turns for home.  What is that?  Your aircraft only have a 40 km range and you did not bring any jammers? Sorry.

I certainly can see why you could have that opinion of modern air combat and based on pop culture that is a very reasonable assumption. ?Reality is somewhat different however.

That aside (because what the heck IS reality is a SF game anyhow right?) much of it comes down to scenario design to ensure that scenarios like yoo have painted arent the case.

At the end of the day you can play VSF, WW1/2, Korea/Nam, Modern or Sf air combat styles (which are all different)- it doesnt matter as long as you and your buddies have fun! ?

As L4 says: "do what works for you!"  :D

Coming to this late but the game is a WWII air combat game in space because 40K has no high tech.

Besides, having played games with radar, jamming, ECM etc I found them all rather boring. This is a fun 40K air combat game with some cool minis.

Hence even modern fighters like the F-35 have secondary weapon systems :D.

And difficult to use since it is designed for air to air combat and not strafing runs (aside from the A-10).  The last time there was a gun air to air kill it was an A-10 shooting down a Helicopter.

There have been some close (w/n 10 nm) fights in recent years (Kosovo).  Since the end of Vietnam nearly all air combat has been using long range stand-off missiles to engage an inferior air force as it takes off (Gulf War) or enters the AoR or the use of closer in Sidewinders when the BVR is not allowed.
It is fair to say that Israel in the 1960s and 1970s achieved more success with the gun in air to air combat than the missile - but missiles were not what they are today (also that is 3rd Gen systems vs 4-4.5 Gen today).

So modern air combat has a lot to do with the EW systems on the aircraft, what countermeasures you have, what kind of missiles you are carrying, how good of a radar suite you have, and how much gas you use and carry.  1960s/70s air combat is a different flavor from modern air combat because missiles were in their infancy and the gun was still a viable weapon because the effective range of missiles was similar to the gun.

If I had to choose a 20th Century war to compare Aeronautica to it would be Korea - jet aircraft, generally few missiles, cannons and machine-guns and air to ground rockets.

In response to Tas's previous comment on basing my views on pop culture - no these are based on my education.  Air Combat is my chosen profession and the culture I grew up in.  Now unless you happen to have flown military aircraft in the past 20 years, know a bunch of people who have, or actually have met and talked to individuals who have been in air to air combat, I think my opinion is a pretty valid one.
