Being terminally short of cash, I haven't bought AI yet (but there's a wedding anniversary coming up :;): ...).

I'm wanting to get ready by trying to put together some ground units, scratchbuilding and converting as needed. Can someone please list the ground units that can be used by Space Marines and IG in the game? (Even if these are only targets, I still want to do the models.)

Regards,
Reaver

The units that can actually do something are these

IG:
Hydra
Manticore
Sabre
Flak gun (Earthshaker)

SM:
Hyperios

That's it. Other than that any Epic unit can be used as a target, it'll just sit there till it gets blown up or the game ends.

As ground targets I would go for

A tank column of about 10 models.
2 or 3 bunkers
A tank Factory or large facility
A Bridge

I might also be tempted to get about 10-15 infantry painted up to represent drop troops that either need to get extracted or inserted.

I've got an old stand of Epic IG Jump Troops kicking around to use as the marker for my troops for extraction :)

Am I right in assuming that the Hyperios is basically a Whirlwind Hunter?

There's not going to be a huge amount of conversion work needed for that! :D
It seems I'll just be using stuff from my normal Epic armies. Oh well, I'll get started early on my Epicomp entries instead...

So there aren't any Land Raider Helios or similar in the game then?

The Hyperios is a Whirlwind that has smaller missiles and an AA mount, and is designed as an AA weapon, at least in 40k. There is no Hunter in 40k, while AI is Epic scale the units are being drawn from 40k references, not Epic.

Here's a 40k Hyperios:

(I use it in 40k as a Whirlwind, I bought it long before the current WW model came out, and I still prefer the look of the launcher).

You could use an Epic SM Hunter to represent Hyperios though.

The Helios is not an AA weapon - it's a Whirlwind weapon on a LR, so is designed for ground attack. There are no rules for ground units shooting other ground units in AI, so I can't see there being a Helios included in the rules at any time. You can use it as a ground target though - it just sits around like any other target waiting to be blown up :p

Thanks for the info - so it doesn't sound like there's going to be much need for converting units. Oh well, guess I'll try and build an airfield or something instead.

Reaver

Just to add that there is a tripod mounted Hyperious platform (whirlwing turret on legs) which looks quite cool.

It's the Hyperios launcher on the same "legs" as used on the FW Tarantula.
