News from the front... or FW newsletter:

So what is it then? ?Aeronautica Imperialis? is the name of our new game of aerial combat in the 41st millenium currently in development. It is a complete, stand alone game using the existing Forge World Epic 40,000 aircraft range, with additional new models we are now working on. ?Aeronautica Imperialis? is far more than just dog-fighting; there will be bombing missions, intercept sorties, troop insertions and extractions, strike missions, as well as pure air-to-air, fighter-vs-fighter combat. ?Aeronautica Imperialis? will be a large format hardback book, containing all the rules, aircraft datasheets, manouvere cards and scenarios needed to play the game. Of course there will be lots of background information on each of the aircraft in this big book, as well as many colour profiles and ?photos? of them locked in deadly combat. Imperial Navy players will be able to fly missions using Thunderbolts, Lightnings, Marauders and Marauder Destroyers. Imperial Space Marines provide some heavy support with their huge Thunderhawk Gunships and Transporters while facing off against the fighters and bombers of the Tau, Eldar, Orks and Chaos. We?ve also designed a new plastic flying base for the aircraft to use that cleverly shows arcs of fire as well as keeping track of the speed and altitude too. I?ve watched quite a few games now and played a couple during play-testing and I really enjoyed it. Each of the different airforces do have their own 'character? and have to be used in quite different ways. Just don?t let an Ork Fighta get up close behind you is all I can say! ?Aeronautica Imperialis? should be released later this year and we promise to keep everyone up to date with it?s progress via the Forge World Newsletter.

So much effort for a new game and none for existing games. Sounds like gamers to me. :;):

But it could be incorperated into Epic Campaigns & similiar.  Also hopefully the rules will not venture far from Epic itself, at least in terms of the aircraft.

Also the rules for Epic exist at least roughly and we as a community are working on them. We are unaware how good the rules for the game are.

But I think as a community we should embrass the game as one of our own.  Epic, Aeronautica, & Gothic should all be fun games and hopefully interact well.

But yes it does sound like a bunch of gamers, making a new game.  Remember this was one of the games that was promised in the Epic rulebook!  Also the game will encourage the production of more air units for Epic.

We as Epic players can do something with Forgeworld that will help us as a community.

Buy from Forgeworld and let them know what minis we are interested in having for Epic.  Want new Epic Tyranids? Want new Epic Chaos? Want new Epic from Forgeworld? Buy something from FW and let them know that is what you want.

A great thought, but no. I will not embrace another game when they have failed to support the game I have already invested so much money and time into. When they have failed to at least finish the core armies for such a game.

Look at it from this way, I buy the rule book (with no minis) and plan to play. They start out with Imperial and Orc planes. Great. What if I play Chaos, or Eldar, or Tau? Well they say someday they will release figures for those factions. Great when? How long? and in the mean time? So we jump a year later. They have released some additional Imperial figures. In fact an additional faction of Imperial and an additional faction of Orcs. But then they reduce support because "the fans" are just no buying. But let's ignore all the fans who are waiting for the other core factions and just say they are not buying.

Sound familiar? It should. It is what EpicA just went through. Do I feel like doing that ride again? No thanks.

But the Aircraft already exist! That is the thing.

Chaos Aircraft

Ork Aircraft

Eldar Nightwing

Tau Barracuda
Tau Orca
Tau Tigershark
Tau Manta

The Imperial Navy

So we are missing Squats, Tyranids, & Necrons by my count. Most everything is there. Or have I missed something? A good number of the mininatures already exist.  I already have 4 Thunderbolts & 2 Marauders for the game because I got them for Epic.

Forgeworld tends to release the book/rules once at least most of the stuff is released. And like I said we as a community can ask them for a particular range, they barely need a reason other than a few dozen possible costumers.  They created the entire Tau Epic range for goodness sakes.

The ForgeWorld aircraft miniatures line is pretty much entirely in place already.

Don't forget, they've put out four hardbacked books so far, as well as a whole bunch of paperbacks. Not one miniature featured in any of those books failed to be released.

Necrons don't use aircraft.

Tyranids don't have fighter aircraft-beasts and so would just be target practice in an air-war game.

Squats... did they ever have aircraft other than gyrocopters? Anyways FW aren't allowed to release Squats since they're officially dead. :D

Sounds like we might see an Epic scale Thunderhawk Transporter...

Well, for once I might bite. I've been good these past months (i.e. the no. of purchases has lowered drastically), the old birthday is coming up, I have the odd aircraft model, and would like to convert some flying stuff for Nids and co.
And if I go for new models, it looks like I won't need many. Perfect for my new 'limited purchase mode'.  :D
I think I will indulge.  :D

I probably will get it, and then try to get my Harridan flocks worked into the game.

Just because they arn't fast enough to keep up with the flying food doesn't mean they shouldn't be there to be shot up.  I mean space marines are being tacts on (just like in BFG).  They have no place in an air war other than troop insersions in a hot LZ.

I'm wary too , but like Vanvlak I'm interested at the same time. Forgeworld do seem to have better track record than Specialist Games in actually getting products "on the shelf". As Orangesm says many of the aircraft already exist.

It all depends on the price though and if the game is any good. It has spurred my interest though, I might have another go a developing a 40k version of Bag the Hun .....

Then that's probably all the Space Marines will be good for. :)

Sounds like it'd work great for linked campaigns.

Say like launching a long range air drop mission deep into the enemy's heart... but first your squadron of escorting fighters has to break through the enemy's patrols, and ensure none of the Thunderhawks get shot down...

I dunno... At least Space Marine Thunderhawks can keep up with the Thunderbolt and Marauders they're likely to be flying with. And they put out a lot of flak for anything which gets close to them. They're not interceptors, but they're very hard for enemies to stop from reaching target (Which seems to be what a lot of the game is based on by the description. Reach your target, drop troops or destroy it). Plus, GW can't produce a 40K game without Space Marines. They're like... 60% of all the 40K stuff sold!

The Thunderhawk is meant to be able to run a gauntlet and survive.  Overall the game when released should have almost everything either released before it or at the same time.
