I'd never pay for it because as you said yourself, the primary mission of a crassus is to get a lot if guys somewhere and fast so they can engage. They're not there to try and take out AVs with at distance. Even with AP shots, while you can't wound with them, CAN place BMs on AV formations. Oddly this is a list that plays a bit more like Marines than typical, being all about setting up crossfires and clipping engagements to break enemy armour in resolution. The infiltrate is interesting (why doesn't EA have an Assault Transport rule I'll never know)

Infiltrate would be good but the option of having an AT ability would also be nice ie a preference to purchase at additional cost

Las Cannons would add a more realistic 40k feel :)

Hmm lascannons...
I think they'd have to have a cost, otherwise nobody will ever take heavy bolters; implying that the lascannons have more value. I'm away from home for a week and haven't got my copy of imperial armour with me. Can they replace all 4, or just the sponsons?

Edit:
Also is there anything else that stands out as being necessary or redundant in a heavy mechanised force? There are a couple of tweaks I think might be worthwhile, but would like to hear what others think.

Draft version 0.5 of this list is up in the first post.
I played a minigeddon game last week with this version against squats (3 activations each! :D) and had a good, fun game. I'll hope to get another game in early next week, hopefully at a higher points cost (time permitting).

If anyone has any feedback then please let me know. :)

Just put an order in with HLS Models for some Exodus Wars models to make up an army.
Would love to have some airbourne elements to fly over the tank lines, . . .
Any chance of getting some Valkyries to carry the Storm Troopers?

My (very un-GW-fluffy) view of my army is to have heavy tanks (Macharius), infantry
in big APCs (Crassus), some walkers (count as Salamanders - but Sentinels would do),
and some flyers zipping forward (Storm Troopers in Chimeras - count as ornithopers).
The heavy AA and MRLs are pretty cool and of course Thunderbolts to add spice.

Yep no worries Andrew.
In my games I'm proxying sentinels as salamanders and chimeras as centaurs. I might as well get rid of them, and have sentinels as the scout unit (as most guard players have sentinel models already) and replace the centaur option with Valkyries. I don't mind that option as it can be pretty difficult to get things in the backfield at the moment.

I'll update the PDF in the next few days.

I've added a battle report to my blog, squats vs this list at 2000 points.

They're Coming To Surrender

I'm thinking of making the artillery and omega formations two strong, with the option to add a third unit to the formation. This will help out with army selection, in what is a fairly inflexible list at this stage.

Edit. Changes made to the list, and version 0.6 is up.

The Heavy Artillery and Omegas are now 2-3 units per formation, to make the list a little more flexible. I've also removed the Salamanders and replaced them with Sentinels, as well as removing the Centaurs and replacing them with Valkyries for the Stormtroopers alternate transport option. The former is mainly for model availability reasons, and doesn't make any material difference, and the latter is to allow one fast skimmer option to the list, that is very slow otherwise.
I am also trying out the Macharius Omega as an 0-1 upgrade to the two companies.

Hi Admiral. Thanks for the feedback.
What list did you take? I found that the formations that I take were usually powerful but expensive, meaning that each activation was fairly important to get right.
I tried to allow the list to be more flexible for smaller points games, but that may have disrupted some of the internal balance that I'd built into it for the larger games. I was very rarely exceeding 10 activations at 3000 points for example, but in the latest version that's much more possible while still taking a few heavy hitters.

I played against this list last Tuesday with my Minervan superheavy list.

3 companies of SHTs (2 Stormhammers, 1 Stormblade)
3 Shadowswords
2 units of Salamanders with commanders
2 units T-bolts

The rest of my points were in hydras and salamander command vehicles for the companies.

My opponent had
1 Heavy tank company
2 heavy mech companies
1 artillery battery
1 stormtrooper in valks
2 sentinels
1 Shadowsword
2 warhounds
1 t-bolt

We went to Turn 4 and I took the game 3-0.

My impression of the list is that it is very similar to the Steel Legion and looking over the documents bears that out. This is a SL list with all mechanized units with the option of WE transports and the Macharius company instead of a Baneblades.

The strength of the 2DC tanks meant nothing to my 3DC bruisers. Macharius vs Stormhammer is not a good match for the little guys.

Despite hot dice on his Shadowsword (it killed 3 of my superheavies and I failed to vape it with my own TK guns twice) the shooting of this list was anemic. It didn;t have any guns that could scare me in direct fire and the 4BP artillery didn't accomplish much either. It shot my SC formation of Stormhammers every turn and all it did was kill a Salamander commander. 6BP wouldn't have helped much with that strategy given that my SC had 3 leaders until he killed the Salamander.

Speaking of Salamanders I saw they were removed. If any list needs them its this one. The main force is just so slow with 15cm tanks and 25cm transports. They were easy to keep at bay and prevent the crossfires that they desparately needed. The sentinels did very little. The Salamanders being AVs would have saved them vs LVs and the extra speed would have been hard to deal with.

I think part of the reason for the lopsided victory was experience, particularly mine at using Superheavies and thus knowing what to do to beat them as well. My not having infantry didn't seem to be a problem and I didn't manage to bring all my Shadowsword's down on the Crassuses (Crassi?) but I think that would have made it much worse for him. Provided the damn things could hit... I missed twice with them and the rest of the time did 1 damage.

Pointswise I only have one concern and that's the Tank Destroyer platoon. I would take tons of those since they are 50 points per tank cheaper in this list than the Minervan one, you can't take 3 tanks as a formation and you are limited to only 1 in a 6-tank platoon. Oh, and you've got them at AT3+ instead of the Minervan 4+.

All that said, 100% would play against this list without prior warning.
