Ulani are a tough one to start out with to be honest.... a combination of restrictive support structure and a lack of robust fast units can leave you in trouble..... check out some of the lists on
www.epic-uk.co.uk for ideas but really you need something approximating the following:
-HQ with hydra - (for the all-important re-roll)
-tank company with hydra (executioners, for the MW threat)
-tank company with hydra (demolishers for the defensive firepower)
-2x shadowsword (essential titan-killer unit and all round awesomeness)
-basilisks (for counter battery fire and the ability to hit the enemy when they try to hide)
-hydra battery (for further ground flak and air-assault deterrance)
-1-2 thunderbolt formations (for ground attacking and late game unit breaking)
sprinkle in griffons, hellhounds, and salamanders to taste, aim for 10 activations minimum
Your main issue with Ulani is the lack of speed, you can struggle to capture the enemy blitz while defending your own, you are also horrifically weak against fast CC troops, especially from air-assault.... a terminator formation in a thunderhawk can potentially BTB an entire tank company, meaning you're hitting on 6's and stand a good chance of losing badly.... however if you try to spread out to counter this, you become vulnerable to being clipped as a 5cm countercharge doesn't get you very far..... if I were using the list, I'd place my T&H objectives close to the centre line, 30cm apart, chug my armoured stuff forwards and try to shoot my opponent's BTS to death while claiming T&H..... (caveat: I have never used Ulani)
good luck and be sure to post plenty of pics
