Heys all, I'm just getting into Epic, and I'm going to start with a Imperial Guard army (as well as a Space Marine army, so that I have two armies to play with).

I'd appreciate any and all advice, be it gaming, purchasing, modeling, etc.

Helpful links would be great too.

Thanks!

Start with a Regimental HQ unit. You need the Supreme Commander. Buying a box of IG infantry will give you enough unitstohave a second infantry company. This can be fielded either as a cheap foot unit, but getting chimeras to mechanize it too is not a bad idea. Mech units have a lot of troops in them and can take and dish out a lot of punishment.

After that, you'll need support. Look at some artillery or Vultures to barrage the enemy with from a long distance.

Sentinels are useful as a scout screen to protcet your units formfast enemy strikes and teleportation attacks. Rough Riders can do similar things, and also act as a cheap reaction force.

Single Shadow Swords are useful to snipe enemy heavy units with, such as War Engines. Death strikes can do it too, but are more fragile.

That's my basic understanding of IG. More knowledgeable users will surely arise to guide you further. Welcome to the Epic hobby!

Buy my Imperial Guard and you're set to go... One part, the other part, or both.  :sam:

Tha RC is right. There's a lot of nice grunts out there. Easiest to reach are Exodus Wars and Dark Realm Miniatures respectivly.
For DRM there's Light and AT for Infantry and Support, Standard(!) for Stormtroopers and Scouts/Sniper for Sniper.
For EW someone else has to answer, I've not ventured far enough in there, yet.

another thing. IG is a pretty easy one to start with. there are not a lot of bad units. if you wait on the bombards, snipers, and hellhounds then you should be good. not that they are horrible units, just that the others are better

If you are looking at other manufactures you should look for the following for guard.

Normal Infantry
Elite Infantry
Cavalry/Bikes/Outriders
Heavy weapons
Command figures
IFVs (Chimera Chassis)
SP Artillery (Chimera Chassis)
SP Rocket Artillery (Chimera Chassis)
SP Siege Artillery (Chimera Chassis)
SP AA (Chimera Chassis)
ICBM/Scud and transporter like thing (Chimera Chassis)
Flame tank (Chimera Chassis)
Tanks
Super Heavy Tank
Super Heavy Tank with titan zapper
Skimmer/Helicopter anti tank apache like
Skimmer/Helicopter transporter Hind like

Lots of companies do this, though noticeably the Exodus Wars range pretty much tries to do it like GW with the same hulls and stuff :) However there is no need to stick with one manufacture. The SHTs could b one company, the tanks another, the chimera look alikes another and the infantry someone else.

'Course play a few games first, maybe using past tourney lists to get a feel for what you like and want to get!
