For some reason I'm thinking that I need a second IG army and I was thinking of going for a small Catachan force. I've spotted the lists on here and on the SG website and wonder if anyone has any experience using them? And if so, are the fun to play (with and against). A second related question is whether they are ever likely to become an official list?

Oh, and if anyone has any Catachan infantry they can spare please PM me with your price. I have one company but I'd like to get hold of the figures for a second before I get going with the project.

Cheers - L.

I came up with a Catachan list, lack of interest though morphed it into the Ork Hunters list which is now up on the SG site along with the Salvar list.

What testing I did with the Ork Hunters showed it to be difficult to play as most of your formations have a move of 15cm. When designing it I tried to have the army list reflect the army from Ghaz's second invasion.  "Historically" accurate but difficult to be competitive with.  I've since morphed it into an air-cav list by given the option of using Valkyries which I've stated for the FW models.

As to official, I doubt it.  Unless GW starts putting developer time into it.  But that being said, who cares if its official or not? Just because it doesn't have GW's seal of approval on it doesn't mean you can't play with it.  Getting it into a UK tourney might be tough though...

Thanks Dave, I'll take a look at your Ork hunters list.

As for 'legal' I guess I'm after a list that I can use against people who might not be familiar with all of the unofficial fan/fanatic-lists and ideally something I can use in tournaments if I ever find time to get to some.

I think I might go with a Catachan 'themed' list drawn up from the EA Steel Legion list maxing out on infantry, Valkyrie mounted storm troopers (as Catachan Devils), Ogryn and sentinels. The real problem I've got with that is that the supreme command come with chimeras which isn't very 'Catachan'. Maybe a bit of creative plastic-card work will get me some dozer blades for my chimeras...

Any other thoughts on the Catachan list? Or ideas in general?

I've found that most of my regular partners really don't mind what I use against, as long as it's reasonably balanced. That's really a reflection of the crowd you play with though and obviously your mileage can vary.  My advice would be just to ask.  After a few friendly games I certainly wouldn't have a problem if you wanted to try something different. Helping to balance a list can be fun in its own right.

That being said, the SG Catachan list doesn't fall into the "reasonably balanced" category in most people's opinions ;). Then again, if you don't power game it I'm sure it works well. Bringing it to a tourney would be tough, so you might be better off going with your SL list idea. Catachan's do have access to vehicles in limited numbers, so it's not that deviant from the fluff.

Let me know if the OH list interests you, I haven't put out the latest edition in the pretty format, but if someone's interested I can be persuaded. I've also finally got enough Catachan's to stop using proxies, they along with the DRM Jungle Troopers will make for a nice army.

There are 3 lists that appeared in Fanatic Online - Dave's Ork Hunters, an older Catachan list, and Chroma's Deathworld.  They all have very similar traits - infantry-centric, terrain benefits, hardened veterans almost on par with SMs, etc..

TRC put a Catachan/Deathworld/Ork Hunter list in his project list for NetEA, presumably with the intent of coming up with some sort of moderated middle ground.  I didn't follow the discussions beyond posting what observations my gaming group had from a small sample of games so I don't know where the project stands.  If you search the boards you should find several threads that talk about them.
