The stats change to demolisher cannons (MW4+ Ignore Cover, instead of AP3+AP4+ Ignore Cover), gives demolisher cannons and thus vindicators and baneblades a much needed boost (especially when combined with some other tweaks to those units).  However, Leman Russ Demolisher upgrades (3 tanks) will need a small tweak to points to balance them.

Why not drop the FF value and leave the points the same?

Keeping the Russ/Demolisher interchangeable seems desirable to me.

I like Neal's idea.  While the Demolisher cannon might out perform a battle cannon in a fire fight, heavy bolters would definitely be above the plasma cannons in my book.

FF 4+ for both Russes would make sense to me and we could get away with tweaking the cannon.

Sounds elegant. Would FF4+ be enough to compensate for the MW Demolisher gun?

IMHO, probably not. But might be close enough to be good enough.

Anyway I'm about to release an updated handbook version, so going to stick in FF4+ rather than the 25/50 points change. Any serious objections raised here,  I'll have to poll specifically and open up for discussion more.
