I'm sorry to necro this thread but has anything happened with the Cadian list recently? Its one I'd be interested in for the future (natural opponents to the black legion!).

Particularly, I wonder if the idea of having two seperate lists is being stuck to.

THE DEAD ARISE!

Hey Kleomenes! ?Thanks for your interest!

I submitted the Cadians to the EPIC Army Competition last year and they were part of my "Chroma Campaign" runner-up entry, so, yes, they're still in development; they just haven't seen a lot of action lately.

The whole lot of lists can be found at the bottom of the page at this link: Epic Articles

So far, I'm sticking with the two "types" of lists for the Cadians, as, by my reading of the flavour text in various books, they do take radically different stances depending on where they are fighting: an army defending Cadia itself in their massive fortress-works is going to have quite a different organization than one fighting in a crusade.

What *don't* you like about having two different organizational lists for the army?

Lost my reply and now run out of time, so abbreviated answer: I was undecided for a long time but after thinking again I feel its a distinction that is not doctrinal but situationally dependent, and as such is best represented by scenarios. Let them have fortifications in attack/defence scenarios, there doesnt need to be a list specific to defensive armies.

I prefer the list layout that has the chimera optional upgrades that gives more options rather than pigeon holing the army too much.

Hope this makes sense, got to run!

To expand on the above now I have time.

I understand the dual nature is supposed to represent the two aspects of Cadian warfare. Firstly the 'Shock Trooper' element is represented - highly trained and well equipped infantry, led by heavy 'elite' shock troops - an infantry hammer. Secondly, the Kasr defence forces, dug in to resist the worst that the Eye of Terror can throw at them. In a sense these two army lists represent that distinction well.

I see some problems with the multiple lists route though:

a) The shock list is very focused around mechanised infantry based and leaves little alternative for any other force - a one trick pony. (TRC mentioned this above)

b) Similarly, the defence force reads like an elite variant of siegemasters, and will play similarly I am guessing.

c) Fluff wise, there are Kasrkin Regiments, Shock Trooper Regiments and Interior Guard (I believe) so there is some justification for a split, but their is little to indicate the Interior Guard are 'static' - and shock trooper regiments are certainly not even on Cadia. The whole point of 'Shock Troopers' originally was that they were aggressive so as to be able to hunt down Chaos Marines in the wilderness of Cadia.

d) I would submit that the defensive strategy evidenced in the Eye of Terror campaign is a result of the operational situation - a normally aggressive army was forced to dig trenches and hide in the fortresses due to the overwhelming invasion it faced. I would suggest that the whole defence vibe could come from scenario issues, so long as the list allowed leg infantry to be fielded - easily done by making all the company choices unmounted and having chimerae as an upgrade.

e) It diffuses playtest efforts between two lists!

As I mentioned I wasn't against it when I first read the lists, but the more I thought about it the more I felt it would be better to have a single cadian list that was a bit more flexible, which could then be well tested and used in attack/defence scenarios if wished.
