Given that the Tallarn were my favorite 2e IG regiment, I'm quite saddened to see them relegated to a slightly too light, too 'new-faddish-unit' side-list. I'd prefer to keep regular rough riders in, keep Russes in. Lose the Tauros/Venator/Sabre/Mukaali units. I'd see them as medium-armour heavy, lots (and lots) of Sentinels, then reams of Chimera, Russes, Hydra, Griffons and a limited smattering of Chimera-based artillery. Not so much super-light hardware and no air, orbital, titan or super-heavy support. Then again, this might simply be a reaction to the "what the hell is a Tauros?" factor.

Now, I hope I don't come off too sarcastic but:

Play a Steel Legion list, and paint the miniatures up to look like Tallarns. Seriously. Or, if you want an armored regiment, play a Minervan list and, again, paint the miniatures up to look like Tallarns. Airborne Tallanrs? Put together some desert-colored Elysians. There are many, many possibilities here to cover a bland, run-of-the-mill IG list, or a different specialist one that just happens to be Tallarn.

This is a Desert Raider list, full of LV and light infantry, using hit and run tactics and ambush. It's modeled after a mix of Lawrence of Arabia and the Desert Rats of WWII. There isn't a list like this for IG and there should be one.

A Tauros is a lighter utility and scout vehicle used by Elysians. Not only is it useful for this kind of warfare (with this list), it also looks like an overgrown dune buggy. Two main reasons why it is in this list.

But, honestly, if you have any suggestions, the please put up a different army list of your own design. We're trying to work things out here. Our goal is, like I mentioned, an LV and light-infantry list that relies on speed, maneuver and ambush to get the job done. This list will not be one designed to slug it toe-to-toe. It will disrupt the enemy's plan, flank them, and grab objectives before the enemy can regroup. It should feel and play differently than any other IG lists.

I'm glad you're showing interest. This is a list that probably needed to be done some time ago.

I just have to leave a point then. The Desert Rats being the inspiration? They are possibly the single most famous cavalry/armoured/tank (division, then later) regiment in the entire British Army. That's the Tallarn right there and that's what I felt I suggested. I appreciate that you want to take your list in a very different direction, so then we disagree. I had hoped that some possibility for compromise could exist, but you have a vision and that's that. You did, however, get a little excessive in your aggression towards me in defending your vision, and I'm sorry you feel the need to call dissenting opinions bland and run-of-the-mill. So, I'll work on my own list that's a bit more 'up-armoured', in which guns actually were given to Lawrence and stop applying feedback to this one as per your wishes.

I wish you luck with your dune buggies and lizards!

Well, reading through this old thread about the Elysians:

...got me thinking a bit, since the Tallarn Desert Raider list would be similar to an Elysian Drop list (reliance on light vehicles--which is fluffy and fine for the Tallarns). There isn't the massive teleport issue with the Tallarns, and this list does feature some AV (Conquerors). But I'm specifically looking at Sentinel formations, Tauros vanilla vs. Venator upgrades, and Desert Raider Scouts (teleporting). Plus the light artillery present. Basically, everything. Ugh.

Not sure what this post is trying to accomplish, I guess I'm just trying to raise some questions again about it and get some happy discussion going again.

Oh, and maybe I can finally get to playtest this on Vassal sometime....unless someone else has jumped in on that already?

Got rid of Taruos transports and added Centaurs. No need to create a completely new unit when the stats were nearly identical to a Centaur, which serves the same purpose. At least in my opinion.

The Sentinel formation should perform a core mission (scouting/engagement), with upgrades changing that mission (fire support). So, yeah, you're right. I can't remember the original reason why I had them mixed, but I know I had one Probably something to do with old age.

I will make that change shortly.

Changethed. Not sure how many Sentinels should be in a formation, so I put 10 and we'll see how that goes. I'm inclined to have 8 instead for some reason.

UPDATE: Added land transporters to Infantry Companies and Snipers as upgrades.

Ok since this died (again) Apoc and myself started chatting at the end of last year and took a revised look and came up with this approach. This is very El Alamein in space...

Heavy use of fast armour, Mukaali, desert raider infiltrators, and of course the Tallarn Support Sentinel from FW.

So thoughts welcome. Should we ditch this or see it through?

It hasn't died in my mind. I check up on it and go through my own notes every once in a while. Was hoping that someone would eventually step in and do a bit of playtesting.

Your list does look good. Maybe some playtesting will take place. What happened to the Tauros, though? Seems a great fit for this army.

I'd dump the Hellhounds for something lighter and more recce-like. Hellhounds in a desert seem to ignore the tanks purpose--rooting out enemies in cover.
