(I seem to be sticking my nose in a lot of developmental threads lately--I blame my growing interest in Epic again, even if I never get a chance to play anymore).

Thinking about this Tallarn list, I agree it should be one of light infantry and vehicles, with scout and/or infiltrator passed around most generously. Vehicles like the Elysian Tauros and Venetor seem to fit with a Tallarn theme very well--a fast, light vehicle able to traverse over rough, desert terrain. Light artillery such as thudds and mortars should be virtually all they can get, though small detachments of Griffons would fit into the theme well. Salamanders would be great. Also, heavily leaning on Rough Riders and Sentinels makes sense, to me at least.

A limit or outright restriction to SHT and large tank formations might be in order, but the list will still need something to fight against opposing SHT and the such. Perhaps 4 (or even 6) strong support units of Russes/Russ variants or such.

Lightly equipped and very mobile, hit and run, raiding supply lines and the such, then massing against a weakened enemy. That's how I see the Tallarns.

Tallarn were my first IG minis that I bought and played with back in the day (when they first came out), so seeing a viable list for these in Epic would do my old heart some good.

I'm also perusing the 40K wiki on the Tallarns to get some ideas. Perhaps a more specialized force list drawn from the likes of one of their more famous regiments (such as the Desert Tigers or Dune Scorpions or the 35th Regiment)?

I'm hardly qualified, as I don't do maths too well, and I have nobody to playtest stuff with. All I can do is bounce ideas off of the rest of you and let it sink in.

If you do this I recommend having plenty of variants for the Sentinels, simply to have some choice and variety as well as various formation sizes for the Sentinels not the bog standard 4.

Agreed. But would they be available for core or support? Or both? And, would it be a single formation, but with variants, or a seperate formation for each variant?

As for the list overall, I perceive these as essential parts of a Desert Raider list:

Tallarn Infantry (duh) with transport (Chimera?)

Tallarn Scouts (Teleport? Scout? Infiltrate?)

Missile Launchers in place of Autocannon for Imperial infantry (same stats, though, right?) and Snipers

Sentinels (various types)

Rough Riders (and semi-specialized mukaali riders--maybe walker or some ability to set them apart)

Tauros (and Venators)

Salamanders (though would this be necessary with lots of Sentinal choices? Maybe a command salamander upgrade to Leman Russes--see below)

squadrons of Conquerors and/or Exterminators

light artillery (Griffon could be the largest unit available)

AA of course (Hydra maybe but Sabre definitely)

Allied Warhounds and Imperial Navy (though warhounds are obviously not subtle enough for Desert Raiders, the key is that they are allies, and if given a choice, a Tallarn commander would want something fast at least even if it isn't easy to hide in the desert).

The theme should be light, quick and maneuverable. A hit and run army with elements able to ambush effectively. Though overall Tallarn is supposed to be an armored list, like was mentioned, we have the Minervans for that. This should be a specialize regiment, one of the more famous ones, molded specifically to fit Lawrence of Arabia and the Desert Rats.

There is some demand for it, because this thread exists. :)

Ok, looking at the various units available to fit into a desert "raider" theme, I'm conflicted a bit about a couple of them.

I like the Tauros. To me, it's a perfect fit. But Sentinels are great too. However, both, fluff-wise, serve the nearly same function. The Tauros is SPD 35 with walker. The Sentinel is SPD 20 with walker and scout. Both are armed identically. I'm having a hard time justifying using the Tauros--as much as I dearly want to--because of the similarities between the two. Without being able to playtest it out at the moment, I'm kinda stuck.

Can anyone explain to me how different the two can be? What is the actual function for a Tauros in an Elysian list? I also notice that the (Steel Legion) Sentinel is 100 points and the (Elysian) Tauros is 150 points. Is 15cm of movement better than the scout ability?

Also, another thing giving me some minor consternation is teleporting "scout" troops. I see it in other lists, but I'm wondering teleport is actually the best way to represent a small band of missile-launcher armed desert-themed soldiers scurry into place unseen, firing their payload, then disappearing back into the sands....

Another approach would be self-planetfall. They've both got ways in which they model the concept better. In this particular case I think Teleport is better for a few reasons:
1. An existing preponderance of teleport as sneaky troops in EA lists (inertia)
2. Unlike a set of troops performing a 40k equivalent of the parachute drop, the use of teleport allows for more reaction to the changing battlefield just like a load of sneaky dudes could choose to change their approach more easily than say a large flyer hovering to do a grav deployment.
3. Less bookkeeping. In an army where significantly proportions of it will be appearing out of the blue, teleport is much quicker to play.

For the record, I think perhaps Elysians should be self-planetfall and not teleport. Tallarn, the opposite

Incidentally, I'm with Splash on this. Obviously there's some interest otherwise this thread wouldn't exist. :)

Still think Splash should cut his teeth on it

Hows this look (sans points and numbers per formation, that I will need help with)

Core
0-1 Tallarn HQ (Supreme Commander and Infantry)
Tallarn Infantry (Commander and Infantry)
Tallarn Raiders (Sentinels--maybe a specialized Tallarn Sentinel?)

Upgrades
Support Sentinels (sentinel formations only)
Hydra
Chimera (infantry formations only)
Centaur with light artillery (Heavy Mortars or Quad Launchers, infantry formations only)
Infantry (infantry formations only)
Support Infantry (infantry formations only)

Support Formations
Griffons (heaviest arty available)
Salamander Recon (maybe with command vehicle)
Rough Riders (maybe change to mulaaki--TBD what they do, if it even matters)
Tallarn Scouts (missile launcher--mainly for aesthetics--and teleport)
Tank Squad (Leman Russ Conquerors, maybe Exterminators)
Hydras

Allies
Thunderbolt
Marauder
Warhound
Warhound Pack

I'd do this version of the sentinel

Mukaali all the way or otherwise why bother? :D
