Turn 4
My remaining Sentinels came in, one on the uncontested Objective, the other to help soften the Middle.

The brutal assaults continued, but I got more FF than CC this round and managed to push the Orks off my Blitz securing Defend the Flag. The orks had the initiative and pushed back hard, knocking my mostly off the middle, themselves getting DtF.

More assaults, lots of support fire from the Sentinels but the Drop companies dried up and only my HQ was holding steady. I tried to blast away with the Sentinels, but they were well suppressed and only placed a few BMs and took out some wagonz.

The Uge warband charged my HQ and smashed it aside despite my efforts and got BTS. An Endrun march by a sinngle sentinel with a Commissar in it broke the orks Defend the Flag.

1-1 at the end, Victory points went to the Guard.

My opinion is that against a less powerful short-range army this set up would be obscenely powerful, I want the try it on some Tau some day. If it weren't for me being a genereally more skillful player than my opponent it may have gone very badly, but I can say for certain that this army is not as good as the Turn 3 Battlebarge Drop.

Are you suggesting testing against Orks is improper, or that Its best to test against the basic armies?

I suspect Eldar will cry big, fat, emo tears when they have to face this.

Ah, gotcha.

The CC isn't that big a deal, the Elysians have a 5+ which was vital when daring Orks to charge me.

Against an Armor heavy list, or one just not great in Engagements a popcorn Elysian force under the current structure is a monster.

Eldar tend to do pretty well in assaults, but I'll try to get a game with them as well as both high and low armor IG lists.

IG overwatch should fairly easily ruin the Turn 3 teleport horde.

One thing I'm worried about is if my unfamiliarity with pocron style armies is making me less adept at using them and if someone else could do better. 3 activations for 450 points is very low, but the Steel Legion is the same and it gets 5 more infantry for not having teleport and can garrison those 450 points so I don't think its broken yet.

3000points, 18 Teleporting activations

This kind of smacks me in the head. That seems like an unusually large number of activations for 3K. I'm not going to do anything about it right now, but that just doesn't feel right.

Other than that, it seems like the list held up fairly well, in spite of the the fact that the list seems more on the edges of the bell curve. Not that that's a bad thing and certainly from a testing perspective, extremes always need to be tested. But in spite of an overwhelming advantage in activations, the Orks played you pretty hard and it came down to points.

Not a necessarily bad result. Thank you for sharing the results.

Cheers,

You can actually get 19 Activations in the Steel Legion with just infantry,

7 Infantry Companies
12 Sentinel Platoons
all Garrison

or you can lose an Infantry Company to have a Regimental HQ.

or this

1 Regimental HQ
4 Infantry Companies
8 Sentinel Platoons
6 Thunderbolt Squadrons

And so on, so the Elysians being able to do it with Teleport instead of Garrison isn't really a big deal. The Steel Legion also has the option to add SHTs for only a slight loss of activations, the Elysians have to think more about how to operate.

Ok, good point. Again, I wasn't planning on doing anything about it at this time, but I just found it notable.

I'll have to fiddle around with the new list and see what I come up with, based on what I like to field.

Cheers,

In my experience, popcorn armies need to have lots of formations that can lay BMs and either the speed or range to cover a lot of the board to help maintain fire discipline.  My guess would be that a Teleport/popcorn list by the Elysians would have one really good turn and then it would go south quickly, even moreso than a Deathwing army.  Once on board it would all be slow and short range (including many assault-only formations).

Maybe that first turn would do enough damage.  It's probably worth a test game or two, but I would be less worried about the Elysians than the Ork Zzap list or a Dark Eldar list where everything is very quick and every formation has some form of ranged fire.

I agree Neal, my Steel Legion version of that army is much more deadly.

Each Infantry Company has 4 more units and Autocannon shots
Each Sentinel platoon loses 15cm MW for 30cm shots

Granted the SL has to stay on board, but it has Garrison OW to fend off the enemy first turn.

That reminds me, where are the actual 'Garrison on OW rules' I can't seem to locate mine.
