This was the second game of EPIC we got in yesterday.

I wasn't playing, just observing and snapping shots as two armour heavy armour armies ground each other down.

Rules Used

Fearless units destroyed if end withdrawal move in enemy zone of control, may "stand ground" and not move.

Enemy formations not "directly involved" in an assault are not considered intermingled.

One Commissar per 450 points

Battlefield:

4x6
Space Marines chose edge deployment.

All the "forward" objectives were packed very closely together at the "ruined city" short edge of the table.

Deployment:

Neither side had reserves.

Space Marines garrison the Scout Bikes off of Marine Objective 1.

All forces are deployed no further than the "long road" that stretches across the battlefield with no formations on the "desert" portion of the field.

The Mechanized Infantry and Reg HQ were all deployed *in* their Chimeras.

(The deployment picture didn't turn out for some reason, so you'll have to bear with me, things should be more clear as the turns progress.)

Turn 1

Strategy Roll: Marines

Armour Detachment 1 revs up and marches to the Cathedral.

The Tank Company tries to double on the Land Raiders, but even the Supreme Commander can't motivated them and they just move slowly forward. ("Snake-eyes" supreme commander roll in the first activation? hard to tell I'm not playing this game!)

The Marine Thunderbolt Squadron 1 goes on combat air patrol.

The IG Thunderbolt Squadron does the same!

The Land Raiders show how it's done, doubling down the road and taking out 1 Leman Russ.


The Mechanized Company advances, debuses, and fires on the Land Raiders, accurate fire taking out one of the Marine tanks.

Armour Detachment 2 advances down the road and takes out 3 of the Mech Company's Chimeras.

The Regimental HQ also advances, grabbing cover in the Cathedral and ruins and pounds the Land Raiders, taking out another heavy tank.

The Armour HQ doubles to fire on the Mech Company, taking out 1 Chimera and 1 Infantry.

The Shadowsword Company marches down the "long road".

The Bike Detachment doubles between the Cathedral and some ruins.

With a loud battle cry, the Scout Bikes engage the intermingled Mech HQ and Company, with support from some friends. ?Three Scout Bikes are trashed, the HQ loses 1 Chimera and the Mech Company loses 1 Infantry? the Imperials win by "2", so the Marine Chaplain takes off to look for more suc? recruits.

Marine Thunderbolt Squadron 2 comes in for a ground attack on the Shadowswords, but the IG T-bolts are on their "6". ?The Marine planes jink and avoid harm, but their mission is aborted?

End of Turn:

All formations rally, but there are still some Blast markers out there?

Turn 2

Strategy Roll: Marines

Armour Detachment 2 advances on the Mech Company and takes out 1 Chimera and 1 Hydra. ?(Man, the Steel Legion player was making Chimera armour saves like someone blessed by the Emperor!)

The Armour HQ and Armour Detachment 1 do a combined assault on the Mech HQ and Mech Company, with support from friends. (Though intermingled, they can't "involve" the Russ Company because they can't get it in firefight range.) ?

The carnage is incredible, but in the end it comes to a straight dice off as all the modifiers cancel each other out? the Steel Legion wins by "3". ?The Guard have lost 3 Chimeras, 2 Infantry, and 1 Hydra, while the entire Armour HQ has been trashed and 2 Vindicators destroyed.


Still needing the inspiration of the supreme commander, the Leman Russ sustain fire on the Land Raiders, a fiery fusillade of fury? that places a single Blast marker. ?D'OH!

The Shadowswords advance down the road, pivot, and target the Land Raiders, skewering two of the heavy Marine tanks and breaking the formation.


Marine T-bolts 1 ground attack the Shadowswords in revenge and just place a Blast marker.

The Bike Detachment then engages the Shadowswords. ?

In the first round of combat 1 Bike goes down, but they take out a Shadowsword with a well places hit that goes critical. ?In the second round, two more Bikes go down, but they take out another Shadowsword doing 2DC and a crit! ?The Marines narrowly win, doing no damage to the fleeing Commissar's Shadowsword which trundles to the Marine Blitz. ?The surviving Librarian also breaks, though he feels good about his performance.

The IG Thunderbolts stand down instead of intercepting.

And the other Marine aircraft squadron *also* stands down instead of doing anything!

Inspired by the Marine's actions, the Mech HQ tries to bring the Mech Company along on a combined assault against the Marines? he fails to do so, and fires on Armoured Detachment 2 to no effect.

The Mech Company tries to redeem itself by engaging Armour 2 in a firefight. ?

Two Annihilators are taken out as are 2 Infantry and 1 Chimera. ?The Marines narrowly win, taking out another Infantry unit and pushing the Guard back?


End of Turn:

Armour Detachment 1 and the Librarian bike fails to rally.

The Russ Company and the Mech Company both fail to rally.

Armour 2 tries to take action, but fails.  They fire on the Mech HQ and take out the last 3 Chimeras, stranding the IG without rides.

The Leman Russ double up their right flank and hammer the Land Raiders into scrap metal.


The Mech HQ seeks revenge by engaging Armour 2 in a firefight, both formations take a casualty, but the IG wins by "1".


Marine Thunderbolts 1 ground attack the Shadowsword, doing 1DC damage.

Marine Thunderbolts 2 dives down on the Shadowsword? and does 1BM, breaking it.

The IG T-Bolts ground attack the Vindicators, taking them out?

End of Turn:

Armour 2 fails to rally.

All Steel Legion formations rally.

Score:

Space Marines 0 (none) vs Steel Legion 1 (BTS)

Turn 4

Strategy Roll: Steel Legion

The Russes fire on Armour 1 taking out 2 Vindicators.

The Guard Thunderbolts strafe the Librarian Biker and put him out of his misery.

Marine Thunderbolts 1 strafe the Shadowsword for 1BM.

Marine Thunderbolts 2 strafe the Shadowsword? for 1BM? poor Marines!

The Mech HQ marches to secure all the IG side Objectives.

The Mech Company marches to grab the forward Marine Objectives.

The Commissar of the Shadowsword smokes a cigar as his tank sits on the Marine Blitz? he loves it when a plan comes together!

End of Turn:

Surviving Marines fail to rally.

All Steel Legion formations rally.

Score:

Space Marines 0 (none) vs Steel Legion 5 (all)

Well, the Armoured Variant/Scions of Iron's reign of terror is finally over!

Really interesting to see how powerful Marine tanks en masse can be.  I really like the list!

Yeah, I think the Scions' commander would agree with you.

It's tough when, essentially, none of your units can safely use cover.
