Hena has been working on an "Armoured" variant Marine list lately and asked if I'd be willing to take it out for a spin.

Had a game scheduled last evening, so I slapped down my Orks, "Raddak's Rumblas", as they've been undefeated in recent play (our local group has been having an informal competition where the winner of a game keeps playing the same army, well with small changes allowed, until it's defeated or wins 10 games) and one of the Marine players put an Armoured list down on the battlefield.

I may not be able to complete the report this morning, but I thought I'd give a taste of things to come... especially as it involves Hena's list! ? :D

Space Marine Armoured Variant v0.6.1

- Number of BMs in assault resolution is halved (round down), but marines cannot get +1 from not having BMs if there is 1BM.
- Marine leaders remove 2BMs instead of 1

Battlefield:

4x6
Armoured Marines select corner deployment.

Deployment:

Armoured Marines garrisoned both Scout Detachments ahead and on overwatch.

Orks garrisoned both Gunzmobz on overwatch and garrisoned the Stormboyz with their Koptas in the swamp and the Boyz amongst the alien crystals.

Remaining deployment as shown below:

(Note - The Whirlwind Detachment was deployed in the cover of the ruins near the Marine Blitz.)

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Marines (after a tie and a re-roll? even though my birthday is next)

The Thunderhawk hammers down to ground attack Gunzmob 1, but only manages to take out a single Big Gun.


The Fighta-Bommerz follow suit and strafe Scout 1, taking out 1 Razorback and 1 Rhino, as they also catch a Blast marker from the Heavy Tactical's Hunter.


Bike Detachment 2 doubles, staying out of line of sight, making its way along the long Marine edge of the battlefield.

Blitz Brigade 1 doubles along the Ork short edge and fires on Bike 2 placing a single Blast marker.

The Tactical Detachment doubles forward, but can't draw a bead on any Ork targets.

Blitz Brigade 2 doubles up to the peak of the tall hill and fires on the partially obscured Tactical Detachment, but does no damage.

Bike 1 follows Bike 2 in the same doubling manoeuvre.

The Stormboyz bounce forward on a double and the Koptas fire on Bike 1, placing a single Blast marker.

Scout Detachment 2 mounts up to double on the Stormboyz and knocks 2 Deth Koptas out of the air.

Gunzmob 1 leaves the cover of the forest to double towards Scout 2 and knocks their 2 Typhoons out of the air!

Scout 1 marshals, moving into a better position and clears all their Blast markers.

The Stompamob doubles forward, a single Stompa able to sight Scout 1, giving them a Blast marker.

With no targets in range, the Whirlwinds actually go on overwatch!

The Kult of Speed revs forward on a double and fires on Scout 2 placing another Blast marker.

The Warlord gets the Warband to march up and around the Black Rock on the top of the tall hill, getting a good view of the enemy below, while Gunzmob 2 stays on overwatch...

End of Turn:

The Thunderhawk flies unscathed through a hail of flak to disengage, but the Fighter-Bommerz lose one of their mates to a Hunter as they fly back to base.

All formations on both sides rally successfully!

Strategy Roll: Orks (on a tie!)

The Stompamob rumbles forward on a double towards the Heavy Tactical, the Supa-Stompa loses 1DC to flooding as it plods through the swamp. ?Still, the Ork Godz are with them as the Gaze of Mork finally hits and destroys a Crusader and other fire takes out 2 Tactical Marines!

The Zoomboyz of the Kult of Speed do something ded kunnin' as they engage the Heavy Tactical by racing RIGHT THROUGH THE FOREST! ?Not a single Ork hits a tree? but in a turn of foul luck, not a single Ork hits a Marine either!

Support fire from the Stompas takes out another Crusader and the Hunter, but the Marines manage to completely wipe out the Kult of Speed in the end? taking away the kunnin'? and leaving the ded!


The Tactical Detachment doubles forward to fire on Blitz Brigade 2, but does no damage.

Bike Detachment 2 then moves forward to engage the Stormboyz with the support of the Tacticals and a few members of Gunzmob 1 are also willing to help. ?The Marines lose a Land Speeder and a Bike unit, but wipe out the jumping Orks and their flying machines.


Blitz Brigade 1 doubles up to engulf both the Tactical Detachment and Scout 2 in macro-blasts. ?The Scouts lose a Rhino and the Tacticals lose a Predator.


Gunzmob 1 tries to sustain fire at the same two targets but fails to aim very well, but fires anyway! ?This incinerates 1 Scout and 1 Tactical and also trashes a Predator and 2 Razorbacks! ?Who needs aiming!

Bike 1 engages the intermingled Blitz Brigade 1 and Gunzmob 1, with support from Bike 2. ?

Despite losing both Speeders and 2 Bikes, the Marines win; 2 Gunwagonz and a few Big Gunz are all that survive to flee the Emperor's Wrath Incarnate.


Detecting a target in range, the Whirlwinds sustain fire on the Stompamob, stripping away Power field.

Blitz Brigade 2 makes a lateral double and fires on the Heavy Tactical, taking out another Crusader.

Scout 1 sustains fire on the Stompamob, scoring hits, but doing no damage.

The Warband doubles up to fire on Bike 2, and miraculously drops a Land Speeder and 2 Bikes, breaking the Marines!

The Thunderhawk fails to provide any close air support this turn.

The Fighta-Bommerz need a little encouragement to perform a ground attack on the Heavy Tacticals and lose another member on the way in, doing no damage to their Marine target.

Scout 2 marshals, repositioning and clearing all their Blast markers.

Gunzmob 2 still remains on overwatch?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

The shattered remnant of Blitz Brigade 2 fails to clear its single Blast marker.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Whirlwinds sustain fire, targeting Blitz Brigade 2? *OBLITERATING* them!  A Flakwagon and a Gunwagon survive to flee the scene.

Scouts 1 then engage the Stompamob in a firefight!  The Marines score no hits and the Orks score 1, taking out a Tornado? but the Marines manage to persevere, winning by "1" and taking out a Stompa, pushing back the klanking Ork war machines.


Gunzmob 1 doubles to fire on the Tactical Detachment and actually manages to take out 2 Razorbacks and a Tactical Marine!

The Warband then WAAAGHS! forward to engage the intermingled Scouts 2 and the Tacticals.  

For perhaps the first time in his career, Warlord Raddak gets into close combat!  Two Grots go down and the Orks take out 2 more Razorbacks and 3 Scouts, easily winning!  The Orks spread out to secure both their forward objectives. WAAAGH!


Bike 2 revs up to engage Gunzmob 1? and is gunned down while only taking out 1 Big Gun!

Blitz Brigade 2 doubles to get a crossfire on Bike 1, but scores no hits.

The Heavy Tactical doubles on to Marine Objective 1 and takes out a Gunwagon.

Again the Thunderhawk fails to provide any air support.

The Fighta-Bommerz dive bomb the Heavy Tacticals, taking out the last Crusader, but not breaking the remaining 2 Marines.

Bike 1 doubles onto the Ork portion of the battlefield, and fires on Gunzmob 1, killing one, and breaking them.

Gunzmob 2 stays on overwatch?

End of Turn:

The Tactical Detachment fails to rally as does Blitz Brigade 2.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Thunderhawk finally shows up and ground attacks the Stompamob, doing 1DC damage to the Supa-Stompa and putting the mob seriously close to breaking!

The Chaplain of Bike Detachment 1 threads his way between the Warband and Blitz Bridage 1 to attack Gunzmob 1.  The Gunzmob is immediately overrun and this breaks the nearby Blitz Brigade and puts a Blast marker on the Warband? the Marines move towards the Warband, getting the Land Speeder within 9cm of a Grot. (Dang Marine cunning!)


Enraged, the Warband engages Bike 1 in a firefight.  Two Grots are gunned down and 1 Speeder is dropped, but the Orks only manage to win by "1" and are unable to wipe out the Marines, who withdraw deep into Ork territory.  The Warband settles down to secure both Ork forward objectives while also marking their territory on the Marine half of the battlefield.


The Stompamob tries to double forward for victory, gets bogged down, and then freaks out when the Warlord starts yelling at them and they break!  (*SIGH*  I was having such a good run there?)

The two surviving Marine units of the Heavy Tactical double to spread out in cover, taking both forward Marine objectives.

The Fighta-Bommerz try to take them out, but only place a Blast marker and the Marines stand proud!

Relieved of guard duty by the Heavy Tacticals, Scout 1 doubles forward, just crossing into enemy territory to dire on the Stompamob, the do 1DC damage to the Supa-Stompa and also manage to get the Orks to abandon both remaining Stompas!  Frustratingly, the big Ork machine is still standing upright. (1DC left!)

Gunzmob 2 stays on overwatch, disappointed they didn't get to fire at a single thing, securing the Ork Blitz a small consolation.

The Whirlwinds go back on overwatch, guarding their own Blitz?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally, while, again, Blitz Brigade 2 remains broken.

Marines 1612 vs Orks 1329 - Narrow Marine Victory!

How get the Thunderhawk to make 2 Stand Downs in a row? After the first missed actiontest all BMS are cleared and it has an Initiative of 1+.

But very nice report. :)

Ok. Must overread it :) I experienced this myselfe...As SpaceMarine player you could be very surprised at the amount of 1s rolled at actiontests :(

If the Scouts hadn't brought the Stompamob under half and it had rallied in the end of Turn 4, the tie-breaker would've been.

Marines 1375 vs Orks 1329

I'm surprised that T'hawk CAS attacked the Gunzmob 1 in the first turn instead of Blitz or Kult as those would have been better targets for it (or Stompas). CAS was supposed to be used against AV rather than AP targets (although 4 heavy bolters are very good against AP).

The initial strike against Gunzmob 1 was to supress the 60cm Soopa-Gunz... and I really didn't think my opponent anticipated the T-Hawk not showing up for two turns! ?If it had shown up, I'm pretty sure it would've been a "great victory" for the Marines. ?*laugh*
And what did the Marine player think of the lists and formations? I'm rather keen on opinions on bikes as I don't have any bike units at the moment.
We didn't have much time for a debriefing after the fight, but my opponent's first comment was "It's nice to have Marine formations that can *do* something."

I think the Bike formations with Speeders did really well, with a couple of Attack Bikes in there as well, it would be even more nasty.

Yep, it's almost the only reason to splurge the 100 points on a Marine Supreme... those dang failed retains!
