Heres something. The concensus I encounter is that assault marines are pretty poor for everything bar insertaion by air transport. To widen the possibilities why not reduce the formation cost to 150 points, and up the Thunderhawk cost to 250 points.

If thats too much for the Thunderhawk we could also perhaps implement the idea of 5+ RA 3dc. Bit tougher and better in assault but greater chance of a critical.

I would to try and make the list less of an air assault beast - unless you go the route of having an air assault marine list and a mud marine list.

If a straight 250 point  change is too much upping the stats to the proposed above makes some changes to compensate the units otherwise losing out - Devs (though they really don't need compensating), Tacs + dred which probably do, bikes marginal, terminators can perhaps avoid their 25 point increase.

But treally as it stands the humble assault marine is far worse than most formations in the list.

Simply boost their abilities. Maybe a 15cm flamer-ignore cover attack, as they can get two of them for a 5 man squad. So they get something shooty. seems not too stronga as you will lack the numbers to take on any formation with them.

I think a flmaer (or normal prepondarance of them) would be more for small arms ignore cover-  a heavy flamer only gives 15cm AP4+ after all!

kay, give them somethink like this. I don?t think SA ignore Cover on 5+ is overpowered, but gives them some ability to drive enemies out of cover. (something marine Infantry is lacking anyway).

I have never understood why assault marines only have a single attack at 3+. Two at 4+ would make more sense. Roughriders get 2 attacks (one first strike!). Its all a bit ridiculous.

Do assault marines need to be good/better at doing other things than an air insertion ?.Why can't they just be specialists at what they do and not fiddled with to try to improve them for something other units in the list are there for.

In the tournaments and games I've used them in they have been excellent, albiet they have always been in my lists as one of the air assaults usually as a lone formation to take out an opponents artillery or finish of an already broken non-fearless formation.

They are almost useless when trying to use them without a T/hawk but the marines have other formations if players want a ground based army.The only things I think could improve them is to give them teleport similar to swooping hawks and have the option to boost the formation size.

I normally fill a T'hawk with 2 formations and go BTS hunting. I don't think they need a boost really.

I really don't see what the need is to change Assault Marines - they are fine at what they do and widely used.

Why two formations of assault marines? I fill with 1 (cheaper) formation of terminators and go hunting.

Note 150 and 250 doesn't alter that 2 formation dynamic and makes them a better choice not in air transports.

Currently once people realise terminators are a harder hitting cheaper option and 2 lots of devs a better more versitile option you never see the assault marines again.

cos I add a captain and a chaplain and get the chance of a second combined assault later.

Works maybe 1 in 5 times but makes your opponent worry even when only 4 or 5 stands survive. Plus the 30cm movement is really usfull too.
