As I was putting my Hunters together today I was thinking about how inflexible they are.  Sure they can take out aircraft at range and have a pop at tanks, but surely marines have better multipurpose weapons.

My thoughts turned to the good old assault cannon.  A twin linked assault cannon on an AA mount, on the back of a rhino could be an effective AA weapon (and looks like the M-113 air defense variant).

However I was wondering what sort of AA value it would have and the cost it should be.

Also, does anyone else have crazy ideas about tampering with STCs?

Does it have the 'quality' feel of marine hardware however?

Twin AC would be AP4+/AT4+/AA? (4+ on an aircraft probably but without some sort of sensor suite?) range 30cm.

It would feel better as some sort of pdf/traitor improvisation in my humble view. Or space wolf :)

Yep, Did it ... mounted the old SM1 & 2 Titan Carapace Multi-laser on Mk.1 Rhinos ... I posted pic in the past.   And IIRC, the M113 w/Vulcan was the M167 ...  My Mech Co. had M113A1s ... The M167s are with the ADA Boys ... We very, very, rarely saw the 167s ...  :)

AC is too short ranged for this purpose. 30cm are not that much in AA. I think the Hunter fits pretty well, maybe a litte bit expensive for a one shot mount with 5+ armor.

My problem with the hunter is that it doesn't seem surgical enough.

Small strike forces don't need to swat the enemy out of the air at massive distances (and alerting others to the fact that they are there), shredding them with a point defense system seems more covert to me and the lack of range not such an issue with small formations hiding under the AA umbrella.

My primary worry about such a vehicle would be that it'd too closely mirror the Hydra. The Hunter has a very distinct feel to it in that it's one of the only AA platforms in the game which uses guided missiles instead of dumbfire rounds of various different kinds. This seems to fit with the over all feel that the Space Marines are the most advanced of the Imperium's troops. They have all the highest quality, highest-technology and most potent items at their disposal. Ranging from Power Armor through Tactical Dreadnought Armor and many other items specifically in their employ. The fact that they use self-tracking guided missiles instead of guns seems to fit with this theme, IMHO. And really, any act of shooting at an enemy aircraft is going to alert the enemy to your presence, since they'll have just had an aircraft either shot at or shot down!

Well you can hold fire until you are detected - however when you are I recomend blowing the plane up as far away as possible (the airbase).

A great skirmish game would be a squad of marines drop-podding into an airbase and laying waste to it fast enough to extract by 'hawk beore local armour activates to get them.
