Hi all

I am playtesting the current BT army list and I have a few thoughts of my own on its development and I thought I would share them with you to get some comment.

Firstly, as a fleet based chapter, I think that the BTs should be tied to the fleet in some way within the game. My idea is to make the Strike Cruiser a mandatory choice, with one formation arriving in the game via planetfall.

To go with this I propose a change to the stats of a BT Strike Cruiser that it trades off a BP for a Pin Point attack. This represents the chapters ability to provide fleet based support to ground troops. The same trade-off can be made on the Battle Barge with an increased number. This can be used to great effect when faced with Titans and combining the fire with a Thunderhawk Annihilator.

Secondly. The addition of veteren troops in the form of Sword Brethren. Give them good CC ability, poor FF and maybe make them Fearless to represent the righous zeal for fighting the Emperors crusade. Similar in ponts to Terminators maybe fifty points less for six units. This puts them above Assault Marines in number and points but not as expensive as Terms or Tacs. They will have no transport included in the cost.

Thirdly. Make the Emperors Champion available to Sword Brethren. He can be any member of a fighting company except a Neophyte and the armour of faith precludes him from being an assault marine.

Fourth. Remove vindicators as a formation choice and increase the number that a formation can upgrade.

Fifth. Return the Assault formation to six units at 250. It worked well particularly with the addition of Landspeeders.

Sixth. Add the Thunderhawk transporter to the list as to increase the number of entry vehicles it can choose from.

Seventh. There is no need to try and convert vows from the codex to EA. I think that they would benefit more from a special rule that stated that all infantry except Neophytes are Fearless in the assault. This comes from the codex and does not require the adaptation of any other special rule or the creation of a new one. I know that people are going to knock this, however at the moment there are armies with fearless for all infantry at all times. Case in point the Thousand Sons, try assaulting those blighters and score an additional 10 hits to no effect and still have to assault them again next turn to kill them outright to take an objective.

As it stands I like the list but feel it lacks substance. It is simply marines with limited support and a couple of new units. ECs are used by other chapters these days and dont realy do that much in the game. Likewise the Crusader is found in other chapters, and is more than likely more widespread than the EC is. The THA is the only BT specific item on the list.

Black Templars are our best opotunity to make a list fare different from the Codex Marines. They abide by few of the teachings, it is a masive chapter with an emphasis on fleet based assaults. It can be made to feel that way with some or all of the above changes. Make you comment, shoot me down or stand by me and support changes. If you want new minis produced you have to make this thing balanced and official, you also need to crasp the creative juices of GW, FW and enspire them to produce something.

Cheers
CAL

1) I don't think, thast the BT really need this.
2) Sounds good but i think 4 units will suffice and Fearless i will adress later.
3) I would make him available to all infantry except neophytes and assault marines.
4) Ok. Perhabs i would keep the Vindicator Detachment.
5) Why 6 and not 4? I'm not really shure about the LandSpeeders.
6) Ok :)
7) I really don't know. Fearless in assaults seems to fit 40k rules and easy totranslate into E:A. But then there is that BT DON't hold their positions if they take casualties and succeed their Leadership test. They run TOWARDS the enemy! But i don't want to force every BT Detachment which takes casualties to move a few cm toward the nearest enemy formation...

and 8) wouldn't Paladins (or Initiates..don't know how they are called in english) have CC3+? They can be equipped the same way as Assault Marines. In fact they are a mix of tactikal and assault marines.
