Post subject:  1000pt Starter Force to Help Teach the Game

I want to teach the game to my 40K opponent and I've come up with a 1000 pt army. If you have any advice or changes you'd like to recommend I look forward to your opinions.

Codex: Space Marines

*Assault Formation Alpha
+Chaplain .......................................225

*Assault Formation Beta ..................175

*Tactical Formation .........................300

*Devastator Formation
+2 x Razorbacks (Lascannons) ...........300

total:1000

I usually start people out with a battle company with transports, it gives them a fair idea on how effective shooting is and how fast things can move.

@ Dave: What's a Battle Company?

@ Hena: Yeah it's a tight list. Not much I can add. Ideally I would have liked to have taken maybe some Termies, Preds, and bikes or Land Speeders.

The one thing I couldn't add to this list was aircraft and war engines. Save that for another day.

Per Codex Astartes fluff it's 6 tac squads, 2 assault squads and 2 devastator squads. Works out to 2 tac formation, and a assault and dev formation each, or 1025 points.

I appreciate that, but I'm trying to keep it under 1000.

I recommend 1500 or 2000 points for intro games; at 1000 points the importance of the alternating activations isn't obvious, and the game feels little different to 40k.

Agreed on 1500.

That gives each player a Battle Company plus a formation and some upgrades. So the lists are similar, but still distinct.

There's nothing so special about the number 1000 as to make it any better than 1500.

Cheers guys. I will bring it up to 1500. Perhaps some Termies and Whirlwinds. I'll play with the list.

Not bad (though not a full Battle Company ;)). What's it opposing? Having identical lists might be a bad idea.

If it's opposing another SM list, I'd recommend going with:

List 1: Assault, Tactical, Tactical, Devastator, Whirlwind, upgrades.
List 2: Assault, Tactical, Tactical, Devastator, Terminators, upgrades.

You could also take a look at the training scenario forces from chapter 1, those were between 1-1.5k I believe.

It's going against Swordwind Eldar.
