Post subject:  Land Raider Upgrades

TRC question on Land Raiders elsewhere got me wondering. The Land Raider stats allow it to transport Tacticals and Scouts while these formations do not have Land Raiders as an upgrade.

1) Does anyone remember why these options were dropped (presumably in a previous incarnation of EPIC)

2) Is there any real problem with adding Land Raiders as an upgrade to Tacticals? (scouts in LR is a bit unrealistic IMO). It would be 'Fluffy' as far as I can see to add the odd LR to the formation, while you could buy three and have a 600 point formation with reasonable all-round capabilities

As I understand it the option was left in there for scenario play or for alternative (then yet-to-be-written) army list styles.

I think if Tactical Marines had Land Raiders as an upgrade they'd actually be a much more attractive prospect.

I'd never noticed that tacticals can't have LRs. How very odd, it's a nice fit.

Obviously I'd happily allow it in a non tournament game.

Without disparaging the efforts on the LR Crusader and LR Redeemer, is that it?

And should they be permitted in all Marine armies rather than just the Black Templars?

That sounds good. I'm gonna try that out next game. Me and my opponent have long thought that marine armour is underpowered (to the extent that we give predators 5+RA and make them 4 for 250 points) and this should help with that.

Annihilatos are quite good if you opponent leaves them alone 'till the end of turn one, so they can move out and be in a position to crossfire/sustain on turn 2.

Destructors are just crap.

So consider packing the anahilators up in a Landing Craft and Planetfalling part way through turn #1 or at the start of turn #2. Note doing this predicates a particular 'mission' for the Landing craft and so the other contents should be chosen with care - but these choices are one of the joys of the list

They pack almost equal firepower against infantry per unit as Leman Russ.
You cannot compare a Battle Cannon to an Autocannon and come out as anything other than very inferior looking. Much less range, worse AP, much worse AT... very poor in comparison.


In comparison to Destructors, Annihilators have better range on the sponson weapons and better firepower on both the sponson and turret weapons (a point of AT is generally worth more than a point of AP, plus AP targets are almost always in cover whilst AT type targets aren't meaning AP becomes even more ineffective).

Destructors are comparatively poor at ranged shooting, and even with the ERC mods are sub-adequate in Firefight situations. Given a choice between ERC Destructors and ERC Vindicators I'd take Vindicators every time, as Vindicators have had four (?) seperate stat increases to make them better, whilst the Destructor has had only one overly-cautious FF increase. Put it to FF 3+ and it might become useful as a FF support tank in the same vein as ground-mobile Devestators (Although they'd be slower than Devestators, easier to supress, wouldn't be able to take cover like infantry, etc).


Back to the original topic: Land Raider upgrades are much more palatable at the EpicUK cost of 75pts.

Yes the EpicUK land raider and perhaps vindicator upgrade costs call out for the devestator company to take the field with some integral armoured support.
