Just wondering what people have fielded against the guard.  Last night my opponent fielded a pretty armor heavy force, 2 russ companies, hydras, some AA, some super heavies, and one mechinized infantry company.  Crappy dice rolls contributed to my demise, but with Adeptus Astartes lack of heavy tanks and almost no WE (except titans), what tactics do you all suggest?

I think I'm going to give my Eldar a go against him, but just wanted some suggestions on SM tactics.  Any suggestions are welcome.

You need to engage on your own terms. Terminators and air assaults.

Base to base contact to force CC roles and then as Meph has said, Terminators, Air Assaults and a couple of Warhounds (plasma the Supper Heavies & follow up with Mega-Bolter on any infantry).

It looks like your opponent isn't playing with any scouts so he won't be able to block off your attacks.

Plus whilst he isn't using artillery keep bunched up together for mutual support and use Captains for combined engagements.

Okay then, some issues I've found with Termies.  You only get four stands.  So unless you work with two formations they are hopelessy out numbered.  The mech infantry gaurd formation is what 7 chimeras and 14 infantry.  So you have to take termie formations in pairs, with a captain, teleport in, pray for initiative and then CC till their two hearts are content?

I've done some air assault, Dev's and Dreads in one T-hawk, 2 assaults in the other.  Still seems my numbers are lacking, and I'm not quite satisfied with the results.  Should I put a Tac formation with a dread in one?  Ups my numbers by 1, but still far short of most other infantry formations.

Hi there!

Against IG i'd field a Thunderhawk with 2 Asault Detachments + Chaplain.

Then get in CC with the Leman Russ Company. If you put one marine into base contact with each tank, you hit them on 3+, they hit you on (not sure) 5+/6+. So even with the reeinforced armour you should get them. Probably place a BM on them first, should do the trick nicely. Ah and after they're broken go after them with every shooty unit you got... one BM - one tank less without that pesky armour save...

I field a drop pod/air assault SM force. Part of the key is hitting has hard as you can in the initial turns and not letting up. I would second the others advice and I usually field two formations of termies.

Remember, your C3 is far superior to the IG and you should strike hard, strike first and never let up.

IG can be broken if you use your strengths and don't attempt to play SM as uparmored IG.
