Just as the name suggest, does a thunderhawk loaded with two formations of assault marines work.

Is it possible to get all the boyz into combat for 8 3+ rolls.  Or is it better to go for an assault devestator combo to garuntee the 8 3+ attacks.

It is possible to achieve this, with there ability to jump from the airframe giving them additional range. I have used it a few times to good effect. You need to pick the right formation and do the norm, give it some BM first. I also include the Captain and Chaplain in the two formatiosn so that they can conduct follow up combined actions.

Cheers
Cal

It works with the right target. In any other case it can be a disaster.

I am assuming that the right formation, would be reasonable well spaced out so that the assault marines can slip between enemy units that have been locked in combat by the other assault marines and thunderhawk.

I was thinking about capatin chaplin for it CAL, for follow up combined assaults and for the inspiring in the assault.

and the extra move that assault marines have over devs means they can then reploy quicker.

I've used that very setup on many occasions. The follow up assault doesn't work very often but can be usefull.

Leman Russ companies are my favorite target for this group!

I like to use devs and two fist dreads. It's 75 points cheaper than with assault, has couple MW attacks and I usually manage to have one of the six units alive behind some rock at the end of the game. This works great with popcorn marines (~11 activations) and when the assault takes place at the end of the turn. If I win the strategy roll for the next turn the devs can sustain and wait to be broken.

Makes senses to me. It's too good a tactic not to use. But the right target with a number of BMs (surpression), will increase the chances of success.  If you are going to do an "Air Assault" like that. Preping the LZ with CAS(T-bolts etc.), Artillery, and/or Orbital assets (BFG ships).  And as CAL said add a CPT and/or Chap., you could do alot of damage. But it could be "dicey".  "Fortune Favors the Bold"  :;):

Hey Crabowl, that was goin g to be my next question.  "Has anyone every used a dev formation with two dreads in a thunderhawk.

You lose a formation but save 75pts.

attack wise

twin assault
8 x 3+CC

dready devs
4 x 3+FF, 2 x 4+FF and 2 x 4+MWFF
easier to get the boyz either in FF or CC compared to 8 stands of assault marines into CC.

so slightly fewer hits but two Mw, though the twin assault can add two comanders to the dready dev's 1 (though now costs 125pts more)

Make that 175 points more (scouts+razor) unless someone has tinkered with the commander costs. I don't use commanders too much since a well placed blast marker can get much better results..

I think 2 assault formations works fine.  With a 15cm dismount for jump pack troops in an air assault, I can't recall a situation where they couldn't all make it to base contact.

I think the difference is not the assault, which is darn good either way, but how useful the troops are afterwards.

Well with jump packs they can move fairly quickly, to where ever you could use them ...
