Rematch using same forces as this battle where the Scions got hammered...

Turn 1

Marines win Strategy Roll.

-Helios bombard infantry company 2, killing 4.
-HQ moves up on top of hill.
-Thawk bombs inf company1 killing 2.
-Shadowswords march foward to join HQ on top of hill.
-Landraiders, march to take cover behind forest near shadowswords.
-Leman Russ march towards Steel Legion right flank.
-Bikes hold.
-Bombards shoot Raiders placing a BM.
-TacA holds.
-Steel Legion player passes on activating overwatch infantry company.
-TacB holds.
-Steel Legion player passes on activating overwatch infantry company.
-Predators double and shoot shadowswords doing 1 DC and placing a BM.

Final positions below.


End of turn, all rally except Inf company 2.  T-hawk flies off enemy table edge due to turning arc.

Turn 2

Guard win Strategy Roll (oh oh). (on a tie and because i won it last round).

-HQ tries to sustain, but fails even with SC reroll (double 1). They kill a predator.
-Predators sustain fire (using SC reroll to do so) on Swords only placing a BM.
-Landraiders move and fire also only placing a BM on Swords.
-Shadowswords sustain fire and kill two LandRaiders.
-Helios bombard infantry company 2 killing 3.
-Bombards try to fire but fail, so advance forward behind infantry company 2.
-T-Hawk bombards HQ killing 2.
-Leman Russ double and shoot Landraiders, no casualties but Landraiders break and retreat.
-Termis march behind forest within assault range of Leman Russ.
-Bikes move up in support of Termis.
-Infantry company 1 remains on overwatch.
-TacA marches across table to left flank.
-Infantry company 2 remains on overwatch.
-TacB marches across table to left flank.

End of turn below.


Landraiders fail to rally and fall back to behind Helios.
Shadowswords fail to rally.
Predators fail to rally.
All other formations rally.
T-Hawk flies off own table edge, takes more flak fire on way but no damage.

Turn 3

Marines win SR on a tie (because guard won it last round).

-Predators sustain (using SC reroll!) on Leman Russ killing 3.
-Terminators engage and wipe out all Leman Russ but the Commissar Vanquisher which retreats broken.



-Shadowswords sustain fire, killing terminator and hunter.
-Bombards sustain fire (SC reroll), killing two tactical units and rhino from TacA, and placing BM on TacB.
-Helios bombard HQ killing 4 units.
-T-Hawk is still repairing minor damage from all the Hydra fire, and fails to take off.
-Infantry company 2 marches to next group of buildings to take a marine objective.
-TacB fails orders so just shoots with a single predator and tactical unit (rest of formations LOS is blocked or suppressed). They kill 3 chimeras from the HQ).
-HQ formation fails orders and retreats behind ridge, one BM from breaking.
-TacA moves and fires on Shadowswords placing a BM.
-Infantry compnay 1 remains on overwatch.
-Bikes remain where they are.

End of turn 3 below.  Victory conditions 1-0 to guard (Defend the Flag as they still hold all their objectives).


All formations rally.

Turn 4

Guard win SR on a tie (marines won last round).

-Shadowswords sustain fire and kill terminator Chaplain unit and terminator unit.
-Lone Bombard fires on bikes and Terminators but only places on a single BM on each.
-Helios sustain fire breaking HQ which retreats.
-TacA doubles to ridge to contest Guard objective, and shoots the Vanquisher and kills it.
-Infantry Company 2 near marine objective goes on overwatch.
-Predators sustain fire blowing up a shadowsword (with commissar) and doing a point of damage to another.
-Infantry company 1 remains on overwatch.
-T-Hawk bombs Infantry company 2 killing 3 (and taking point of damage from the hydra).
-TacB advances and shoots shadowswords doing another point of damage and breaking the company, which retreats.
-Landraiders double and destroy hydra from infantry company 1, and just breaking the formation (BUT oops I fired with both even though one was suppressed...  retaking this roll for purposes of theory, the hydra should not have died, meaning the game should have gone to tiebreak as nothing further I could do including the bike march next would have won the game on objectives...)
-The bikes march using the roads to the marine obejctive near infantry company 2).

Game was counted as 2-0 to marines (they shall not pass and defend the flag).
But should actually have been a tiebreak (0-0 on victory conditions given corrected final rolls for cheating landraiders, rallying and roll to see if game continued one more turn). Tiebreak would have been:

Guard: 637.5 total victory points.
Landraiders at half strength - 175
T-Hawk at half strength - 125
Termis at half strength - 337.5

Marines: 1975 total victory points.
Leman Russ destroyed - 700
HQ under half strength and broken - 800
Shadowswords over half strength and broken - 250
Infantry company 2 under half strength - 225

So still would have been a win for the Scions, just not by objectives.

Conclusion

Ok did better that time... threw my entire army against one flank and ignored the rest of the guard. Also actually left some units sitting back waiting for an opportunity instead of just charging everything towards the action as quickly as possible (gasp).

All the predator annihilators helped out a lot against the chimeras and tanks in the end. They die pretty easily but can do a lot of damage if you don't kill them (and the guard player got unlucky in shooting at them). The big guard formations are tough to crack but could be outmanoeuvred more easily (and took a real pounding from the Helios and T-Hawk bomber). Guard would have been better off with a few smaller formations as well as the big ones I think (and some t-bolts).  Big garrisoned guard formations on overwatch did mean I couldn't get close to any of their objectives until the final turn, and even then it was just to contest one of them...

Helios once again very useful. Had it been a typical guard army with basilisks or manticores or t-bolts, I think the 500 points would be worth it for the armour protection against counterbattery fire and air attack.

Interesting also that you used the Helios as Indirect Fire weapon. Didn't feel like losing too much when las cannons didn't fire?

In this battle - no, just the barrage was very valuable and deadly. I almost drove them forward to use the lascannons,  but felt I needed to just maximise barrage on the infantry and chimeras more urgently...
