Also Forgeworld will be releasing Thunderwolf models for their next IA book. :)

Reading the codex atm and it seems the Thunderwolf cavalry is max of 5 in a 40K list. They also have a "leadership" effect on packs of Fenrisian Wolves as they have the Wolfkin ability in 40K.

Given this, I could see a basic idea would be to have the Fenrisian Wolves as a formation upgrade when a character is taken and a Thunderwolf upgrade for that same character.

Alternatively (or both together if people prefer to get the spectrum of possibilites), would it seem ok to perhaps have a Fenris Wolves formation lead by a character on a Thunderwolf unit (3-5 minis to the single base??) upgrade to aid in removal of BMs etc? It seems to look more like what would actually happen rather than there being a stand alone formation of Thunderwolf Cavalry - being rare, as is mentioned.

Just some brainstorming about how to approach this issue anyway....

My main concern is trying to avoid the list looking fan-boy designed and throwing everything in. I know new things are cool, and at first glance it would be cool to have thunderwolves but should the Epic lists have to follow every codex?

Just have an option to add a character to a fenrisian wolf unit, and explain in the fluff text for them that characters sometimes like to lead wolf packs riding thunderwolves.

No need for a new unit.

It's not just characters that ride them, they also have whole squads of wolfriders.

Take that Canis character, and you can have 30 of them in a 40k sized army.

You confuse this E&C.
Canis Wolfborn only allowes Fenrisian Wolves as Troop choices.

Nothing in the Codex will increase the amount of Thunderwolf Cavalry.

So Fenrisian Wolf Packs are even more likely a formation type then.

I think I'll take Zombo's advice and add Thunderwolf riders to a Fenrisian Wolf pack. To begin with at least.... ;) We can see how they go in play etc and make a further decision later.

Edit - looking at the list from design point of view, a thunderwolf can be an upgrade to any character so I will let any hero take one and give people the option of where to put them. That way people who want more than a few can have them. Those that don't don't have to take them.

Oooh.

So they're only a 0-1 Elite choice?
Or a 0-3 Elite choice?

With Fenrisian Wolves as their own formation how will you justify to command a pack of animals a couple of kilometres away? :D

@E&C:
Both Fenrisan Wolves Packs and Thunderwolf Cavalry Squads are non-restricted Fast Attack choices.

Canis Wolfborn allows Fenrisan Wolves as Troop choices.

Right, so the maximum ammount of wolf type units you can get in a single 40k army is:

6x squads of Fenrisian Wolves (Maximum of 90(!) Fenrisian Wolves)
3x squads of Thunderwolves (Maximum of 15 Thunderwolves)
2x Wolf-riding characters (One of which must be Canis Wolfborn)

Mind you I assume that'll have blown the points total for a typical 2000pt game by a considerable margin.

Looks to me like Zombo's idea is best though, as those ratios look about right if you squint.

Yes. And still with Canis you could replace each squad of Thundrwolf Cavalry with a Squad of Fenrisan Wolves to a maximum of 9 squads of Fenrisian Wolves (135! Fenrisian Wolves) :D

Oh and Space Wolves can take two HQ choices per HQ option. So you can have actually 4 Thunderwolf-riding characters (provided that the rest of their equipment isn't identical).

And the point is, this is Epic not 40K as we're all aware. So some adjustment can be played with. 15 Thunderwolf cavalry equates to about 3 units in Epic. I'd rather air on the side of rarity rather than have a Thunderwolf formation and just keep it to an upgrade. Like I said it can always change if necessary.

It's called abstraction :D Epic does it a lot. Plus you yourself said you could take up to 135 Fenrisian Wolves in 40K :D I'm just downsizing that somewhat. Also, going by the codex the marine that becomes the pack Alpha learns to "communicate" or "order them about" with "snarled commands"

You could just say that the pack always includes a Thunderwolf unit to lead them.

So something like:
6 Fenrisian Wolf units, and 1 Thunderwolf unit - 250 points

Fascinating debate :)

I inadvertantly painted my Space Marines in near-Space Wolves colors. I'll certainly be following this as a result.

What models do you propose to use for these wolves and wolf riders?

Personally I think the Wolves here:

would be a good start for Fenrisian Wolves.

Not too sure how Thunder Wolves would work out, but then I'm in the 'that's silly' camp and wasn't planning on adding any.
